Repaint for Piglet's A-12A Avenger II

Thanks,

That one was gathering dust on the shelf for quite a while. I figured I'd have another look-see at it before abandoning it for good. It came out much better than I expected it to look.

I am looking forward to your re-release of the Sundowners.

Tommy

Took a bit of time off to buzz around in an Avenger Space Shuttle...;)
The retros are effective as 'flat' images ...I'd toyed with similar to create cannon ports ...but then got distracted.

It's taken a while to redraw almost 'everything' into alayered PSP image ....have never really done a lot with them ... so now am discovering how easy things can be made to be....

I'll add the Sundowners into this system more fully before release...but here's another of yours that is in the layered PSP....

Didn't take as long as I thought.... here's the Sundowners in the layer system...;)

This one has been submitted here...

One of the [several] great designs by Tommieboy that I just 'had to' play with in a higher res...to see what would happen.

111 Sqn. US Navy Sundowners. The Avenger II wing/form is just perfect for these graphics ...;)

The fantastic repaints for the Avenger has grabbed my interest again. I'll reload and give it some more time. Piglet's stuff is already top-notch. Your repaints have added to it.

Thanks!

there are some really cool paints in this thread. i'm surprised it's been so active. still though, in all his time, no one has painted one to look like an actual dorito.

@DL
Tommie and Jafo - some seriously yummy repaints there. Love the X-15 and most recent NASA paint - really believable.
Thanks DL, if it wasn't for JAFO, my NASA repaint would still be sitting on the shelf gathering dust.

@JAFO

The retros came out much better than I ever imagined; they look good from any angle. Sometimes you get lucky.

I am glad these repaints are creating more interest in this jet. And the jet itself is freeware; you can't beat that!

Trust me, I started one; it looked like a real bad skin condition, so I stopped.....:blind:

The NASA bird up in its element 300,000 feet above Maui; I just wanted to see the curvature of the Earth.

I had to "slew" it up there to get these images......:costum:

Can you go to the moon in FSX?

Nice shots!

I really, really like the orbiter-NASA paint - it's just fantastic.

Wondering if anyone else is thinking what I'm thinking: a rocket powered test aircraft. Wondering if I can string together a short-duration "rocket" motor (I understand FSX doesn't do them properly) with just a couple minutes worth of fuel - along the lines of the X-24A mod from Piglet and recently Lazarus. Maybe borrow the exhaust from that model, and a short-duration fuel supply. Maybe borrow some bits from the the Xtreme Prototype X-15 .... or from Piglet's own Orion Clipper ...

Conceptually, if the XB-70 had been kept around for a few years, it could ostensibly have been a launch platform, just as it was envisioned for a delta-winged X-15 aircraft that was conceived to follow up the original 3 airframes ... product family progression to have followed as per the following ...

For those familiar with Martin Schweiger's fantastic freeware Orbiter sim, this addon was created to simulate exactly what I describe ... it's as much fun you can lawfully have in a pressure suite ... http://www.gregburch.net/orbiter/X-15D.html

So, back to the XA-12, and Tommie's crew return vehicle idea - this model could work well, if I can figure out a suitable propulsion system. You could either slew up to around FL450, like the typical X-15 launches, or maybe the concept would be a runway launch - with a really long (likely 5-min plus fuel duration) to go from runway to around FL2500 or higher, and at high (Mach 4+) speeds ... partial reentry test flights, flying the HAC to land at X68 at the Cape ... ahh, the possibilities.

Final paint question: I think I know the answer (likely no) - but would there be a way to manipulate the canopy texture in order to partially "enclose" the bubble canopy for a more "thermal" resistant design? The idea in my head is again, from yet another Orbiter addon, the fantastic XR5 Ravenstar, a concept vehicle set in the mid 21st century ....

Possibly not doable - but thought I'd ask.

Anyway, I'll poke about with propulsive ideas - and see what I come up with. But to Jafo and Tommie - a huge thanks.

Tommy's NASA paint is great....I can't even think of a way to add to it. It just looks right as-is.

I'll give the 'Dorito' a go...... might end up looking like Spongebob Triangular pants tho....;)

......but would there be a way to manipulate the canopy texture in order to partially "enclose" the bubble canopy for a more "thermal" resistant design?.....

I tried to do that (for a "drone" version of my NASA repaint) but couldn't figure it out; no matter how much a messed with the color of the canopy and the alpha channel, I couldn't get an opaque canopy. I'll have another look-see to see if I overlooked something simple.

Looking forward to new propulsion system if you can figure one out. I would prefer a maglev rail for the initial shot into space.......:costum:

Hey Tommie!

Amazing how like minds think at times ... scary! I thought about more after posting and realized there's also the "how-this-will-look-from-the-VC" question - maybe solidifying parts of the transparency is just not doable. If it can be, it'd be pretty cool, though.

Even if not, I'd like to see how to figure out how to do the propulsion. Maybe it's an air-breathing engine (as is) - but with the inclusion of a ramjet/liquid rocket booster motor effect (and resultant speed increase) that's triggered by the afterburner. The flight characteristics may be seriously wonk ... but it could be a sort of X-24 Dynasoar meets antipodal bomber (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silbervogel) type of craft ... possibilities...

Jafo - all you some serious lumpy bump maps to give that texture the 'TEXTURE' it deserves ... :icon_lol: Fun stuff all ...

DL

I think the only way to alter the canopy would be with MDLMat ...and change the properties of the model.

The Avenger doesn't have bump mapping ... so all that can be done is some 'faking' with the trans layer...;)
Here's another great one by Tommieboy.... imported into my layers. It'd need more tweaking for alignments re text etc. but it's certainly more efficient than pushing each of every 16 million pixels in a 4096 res...;)

......there's also the "how-this-will-look-from-the-VC" ....

With a totally opaque canopy, you (as a passenger) would only see this signage on the interior side of the VC:

If you are close enough to read this,
you are in some serious #@%$

Seriously, by the time you have to abandon ship (the space station), things can't be all that good....:blind:

Wow, I really struggled with the graphic layout on this one. It's bothered me enough, that I was thinking of revisiting the graphic layout on this scheme too. I didn't think you would bother with this one, but it's nice to see someone likes it enough to give it some additional TLC.

Tommy .... I prefer the red/white one graphically, but it was that and this one that sparked my interest.
It's virtually a 5 second job ...chucking it in as a layer but TLC will mean revising text locations and the odd alignment or two....but I think otherwise less-is-more and I shouldn't add too much BS to it...;)

Edit...
Here I've put a little TLC in....aligned the blue/white border to exact 45 deg ... makes the white a bit thinner tho... and stuff like the Aussie flag is refined to high res. Deleted much of the extraneous stuff...logos etc. even softened my lines....

Probably need advice from the 'boss' though...like keeping [or not] the RAAF badge, etc....;)

The x-15 model perhaps looks a little too clean?
