Looking really good UT.

What air bases do you plan on doing in Burma?Or are you just doing Mingaladon? The AVG used several until July 42.

Hiede,

The Rangoon area will have Mingaladon, plus:

Highland Queen LG ( later known as Hwambi airstrip)
John Haig LG
Johny Walker LG (later known as Hlegu airstrip)
Pegu
Pegu Cub strip
Kyaikto LG
Thaton LG
Zatakwin
Hlawga Lake FP (used by Empire class flying boats pre-war)

I just have the early '42 set up done, but the JAPs did some work at Hwambi, Mingaladon & Hlegu, plus started another strip West of Pegu, so there'll need to be a later War set.

The current scenery doesn't include Moulmein, but I plan on heading South so should catch this next.

Because this building is all so time- consuming ( the Irriwady delta bgl takes 90 mins to compile in G2K, & I havent started adding coastlines yet), & the CBI is so bloody big, I thinking I might just do smaller, airbase vicinity sceneries for the more northerly, inland locations.

This might get you some of the other airbases faster, like Toungoo etc.

1st Air Combat Group operated P-51A and B-25H out of Halikandi airfield , India assisting General Windgate's operations in Northern Burma in 1944. Halikandi was a grass field of 4500 feet on a tea plantation. Windgate's operation was to used C-47 towing the British gliders on a surprise assault to set up airfields in Burma. The P-51 pilots flew the B-25H, flying them like fighters with the solid nose guns. 😁

Looking at Talon's AVG, 26 of his missions can redone with your newer scenery. The British flew from Pegu and Moulmein.

Most of the AVG bases after Mingaladon were north except 1 was south west.

Loving the ground tex and the odd pockets of scenery with great places of interest/nav points.

Have you mentioned what mesh you're using, suits the area very well?

Cheers

Shessi,

Everything I do with scenery is to highlight Rhumbas mesh - Dick's work back in 2009 really did transform CFS 2's world for me

Hiedi,

That's more than I thought. I will do some more research on Toungoo & Moulmein, & start collecting map data for the areas in NE Burma (Lowing?) & SW China - maybe I can at least get you some strips at the correct locations for use in a Rhumba's mesh world...

If you want I can list the airbases and you can look them up.Talon also had a drawing of Mingaladon that shows placements of the runways and facilities. If you want I'll try to find it.

BTW Talon's father served in Burma and was in Merrill's Mauraders.

Hiede,

A list would be useful, just to cross-check.

The Mingaladon layout would also be useful. I already have 3 different plans, the most detailed being an RAF one from 1943 which shows the additional hardstands & parking the JAPs added.

Although, if you overlay them, none of the runways quite match up, & the various Web sources often quote a length & heading that doesn't match the RAF map...

Re-reading the 1942 Burma Air War I'm struck by the "novel" arrangements made by the RAF & AVG whilst stationed at Mingaladon.
Each squadron seemed to have a section at each end of their assigned runway. When the alarm sounded, each section would take off from their end of their own runway, resulting in some hair-raising moments as their takeoff flightpath's crossedo_O.
It's probably a good job the numbers of serviceable aircraft were as low as they were!🤣

BTW, the beach landing strip pictured up-thread was at Letkokon. West of the mouth of the Rangoon river & Elephant Point. It was used by the Tiger Moth's of the Burma Volunteer Air Force, who were instructed to fly coastal reconnaissance flights of the approaches to Rangoon & the Sittang. They were based here when the detachment at Moulmein had to fall back ahead of the Japanese advance.

Talk about a Folorn Hope - it must have been terrifying to fly those missions!!

Now, where to find a multi-LOD Tiger Moth for CFS 2 ...

Highpockets,

Thanks for the link. I already had this doc, but the airstrip details are useful - if I ever get that far North! :dizzy:
If you ever you get up that way, these are the co ordnances. elevation noted as 69 ft. Not the airfield but the town. Airfield exact location I could not find.
24° 41′ 3″ N, 92° 33′ 29″ E

Some day , I hope to be able to add some of everyone's work to my install and fly again. All I have had time to do lately is just see the wondaful work done buy all.
