Shooting down A/C

17% 30%...man you guys suck! :costumes: I have had 67%accuracy once with 95% realism (-5% from auto-mixture) with FFB and all.
But I NEVER shoot in a larger distance than 90 yards.

I agree with you Gousgounis, when I first started with OFF2(not long ago) I was spraying bullets all over the place, with a hit rate in low single figures. I soon relised that you need to get close in order to be able to aim at a vital area, pilot/engine/fuel , any one will do. Having your guns set to 'tight' will help you maintain a discipline when in combat because you need to be right on target. Hit and Hope is not good enough. If you don't waste bullets you've got more to spare for the poor bloke who happens to come into your sights. If Phase 3 is going to be somewhat tougher, it will be good to get your mindset right ,now.

The grass is so much greener on everywere else...

CAMELJOCKEY and GIMPYGUY; thanks a lot for these nice links. My god, all these wonderful things happen so far away - the grass is really greener in the "New World(s)" USA, Canada, Australia and NZ. I will definitely look into these pages more often. and highly recommend them to everyone else, who hasn't yet. Great!
Sorry, GIMPY (writer blushed), could have known your link, since I "ran" through your "Tipps & Cheats" sticky, when I joined this forum - there is just so much information in it, I must read it again, closer.

To PARKY: maybe, the "Maltese Cross"-planes burn most beautiful; but not so easily! It took me all my ammo to make an Albatros burn, whilst the British, I've burnt quite a lot of them. Only problem: the pilots seem to be fire proof; they keep flying on and on sometimes (especially 2-seaters).
Cheers; Olham

One more SHOOTING DOWN tipp: when I encounter 4 - 6 crumpets, whilst we are only 2- 3 Albatros, I don't try to bring one down first, and then the next and so on. I rather give each plane that comes in front of me, a "hot shower" first; that limits their flying abilities a lot (sometimes they even crash short after); and then I finish them off one after the other. That way, I could often shoot down 4 - 5 planes. (Well, when we're in P3, this will be the "good old times", I assume... Pol? Think, I heard him laughing.)
Cheers; Olham

If the warnings of the 'In Croud' (They that have already played on OFF 3)areto be believed, and I'm sure they are, We could all be in for a rude awakening.

I agree, the best tactic is to hit and run, keep moving, dodging. Never hang on the tail of an EA more then a few seconds, as you are focused on him, someone will focus on you. Keep your head on a swivel always checking all around you, not just your six!

Pepper as many planes in short well placed burst and move on to another. Wound as many as possible, this will as Olham states, reduce their maneuvering ability.

Using this, I have flown the Dr.1 against five SE5a's and will down each one all the time.

Also, know when it's a good time to disengage a fight, live to fight another day.

Remember, "do not die for your country, let the other poor bast$#d die for his."

Good Thread,
WF2

Great pictures, BAYWING; I'd really like to see these planes in flight. Now, I may be the last (sim)-pilot on earth, who doesn't know, but please tell me: where's "Old Rhinebeck" - is it just a translated German airodrome, or is it in America? (Now, please don't you all come down on me - just one answer would be quite sufficient).
Thanks; Olham
Thank you Olham! As more than a few have posted, Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome is in Rhinebeck, NY, USA. There are a couple more sites you might be interested in:http://www.colepalen.com/ dedicated to Cole Palen, the founder, and his wife Rita.
The other is the trouble thread at: http://www.theaerodrome.com/forum/old-rhinebeck-aerodrome/
While I won't go into it here, there is much truth in what has been written.
My photos are from pre-2002 and from what I have heard, many of the a/c shown are no longer flying there (or anywhere else). I had the pleasure to know Cole and Rita, they were wonderful people and I miss them both.
Glad you enjoyed the pics, it was a real treat to get up flying for the air to air shots.

Thats how Verner Voss died :isadizzy:.

Something to look forward to

Wait: it gets alot worse, if you're lucky, you'll retain most of visual skills, if not, you'll begin a journey on the slippery slope called your senior years, which I can sum up in one word, however this being a family oriented forum I won't. I'll leave that choice to the reader.

Firstly let me say I HAD 41% hits, at the onset of Phase 1, with a Microsoft Sidewinder II FFB, as I said: It's a slippery slope, and in my case, dang steep. At the beginning reading glasses, which become stronger and stronger, then when they look like a telescope, you start carrying a jewelers loupe with you when shopping. As even regular newsprint becomes difficult to read, fine print . . a horror

Couple a decrease in overall vision to a natural slowing of reflexes, you'll discover the reason behind the lack of REAL LIFE Fighter Pilots, beyond the age of 45.

As an example: The other day I watched the 'Final Countdown' which I have on DVD. Picture if you will, a clear cloudless day, over the vast ocean, with no obvious sun glare. Perfect Flying Weather, I knew from previous viewings, that two Japanese Zeros were sure to appear on the horizon, head for my position, overfly me in approximatly 8 seconds.
I never saw the Zero's until they were within rock throwing distance, and I knew they were there.
I replayed that scene 3 F'ing times. I wanted to see'm, but I couldn't

As we age, this wonderous machine starts to wear out in all respects.
When someone says' I'm a good at 63, as I was at 33 ' He's a liar, or a fool, or he was a pitiful 33 :kilroy:

Could be the Hollywood editing. I don't believe everything I see on the TV, either!:mixedsmi:

I wear glasses as well :banghead:.
But hell my reflexes aint as bad as if I were 60 :costumes:.

Sounds sad, all that about "Old Rhinebeck" - Vultures for Eagles ?
WF2: can I use that last sentence as my motto ("do not die for your country, let the other poor bast$#d die for his.") ?
Gousgounis, how do you mean: that's how Werner Voss died? And that reflexes-bit towards GIMPY: you chose a laughing FOOL - maybe well chosen. Well, you're 18 - come to our age...
Olham

You miss the point, the Flick came out late 80's, I've owned the DVD since 2003.
With younger eyes, I saw the Zero's, today nothing, till it's too late that is :costumes:

My apologies, I'm not that far behind you age-wise, so I don't always comprehend things! Guess that just makes your point all the more?

The motto is from the movie "Patton", not sure where it came from before that.

Verner Voss dogfighted with 5 Se5s from RFC-56 putting holes in all 5 but never really shooting down anything...

It is true then..your reflexes get very bad once years go by..
Now I understand why everyone is complaining when they see old people driving cars. Mobile killers :kilroy:

"do not die for your country, let the other poor bast$#d die for his."

Didn't George S. Patton say that? Or was it George C. Scott, or both?

I do not think Patton real said that, more like ... hollyyyyyywoooood, ( said in a broke Japanese English accent ) could be wrong?

Olham, use whatever your little heart desires. :a1089:
LOL!

My god, this woman... - first you write about your way of aireal combat and how you like to "pepper" enemy planes; and now this Domina smiley (or is it a "Violey") in black leather! You make my neck hair rise (and now, please, don't come up with typicall associations, everybody!) lol!
Cheers; Olham

PS: were did you get this smiley from? It's cute somehow, still...

Being in SW Florida the old people capital of the Free world, it's not unusual to see a little old lady peering through the steering wheel spokes of a Huge Linclon Continental, or a 4door Mercury Marquee
OR Around this time of year the SNOW BIRDS Leave Michigan, Ohio, or the peoples republic of Massachusettes and head here :costumes:
Last year, .. Roughly about this time . . or shortly before Christmas . .they announced over the radio, that the Florida HP nailed a yellow Ferrari in downtown Fort Myers, doiing 175mph... must have clocked him with a helocopter, but nailed him with roadblock. Somehow I don't think he was a Local :isadizzy::isadizzy:
