Shooting down A/C

As we age, this wonderous machine starts to wear out in all respects.
When someone says' I'm a good at 63, as I was at 33 ' He's a liar, or a fool, or he was a pitiful 33 :kilroy:

Ah, but it might still help to put it to the ladies this way

"I'm not as good as ever I once was, - but I'm as good once, as I ever was "

As someone once said, I forget who, 'I can still jump as high , but I can't stay up as long. I have to confess, that person must have been speaking about me.

Verner Voss dogfighted with 5 Se5s from RFC-56 putting holes in all 5 but never really shooting down anything...

It is true then..your reflexes get very bad once years go by..
Now I understand why everyone is complaining when they see old people driving cars. Mobile killers :kilroy:

Werner Voss actually fought 6 SE5A's from 56 squadron (JTB McCudden, VP Cronyn, RW Young, APF Rhys-Davids, CH Jeffs & KK Muspratt) with RTC Hoidge jioning them from Bowmans flight at some point in the battle.

From the little I have just skimmed through in september evening by Barry Diggens, I can't be bothered to cross check the info with High in the empty Blue or Flying fury. It appears that Jeffs and Young mainly stayed above the battle as top cover.

As for the never really shooting down anyone, I suggest you purchase High In The Empty Blue, if you do not already have it as it is an excellent read, which is the WW1 history of 56 squadron and covers the battle in some detail, Voss shot the kingpost of Cronyn's SE5a out and Cronyn dropped out of the fight and headed back to 56's airfield (Estree Blanche or possibly Vert Galand, I can't remember where they were stationed then). Whereupon landing he climbed out of the SE5a and collapsed on the ground crying, it is the only instance where I know of a pilot being administered with a large brandy by his CO on landing.

In the parlance of the day Cronyn would have been classed as another victory for Voss, if only he could have got home to claim him, but that is a completely different debate which has been aired to death on The Aerodrome.
