In March 2006, Model Aircraft magazine published a "Spitfire Special" in which they cover the prototype in some detail including some valuable info I did not know and is not mentioned in M&S
They seem to be very certain of their facts and say that the finish was recorded as "grass-green"which led them to suspect that the paint was Yellow-green chromate primer. The alloy beneath was anodised and therefore, apparently, gave a "patchwork"look to the finish as the anodisation affected the shade of colour.
If you don't have the mag, try to get a copy. It has some excellent detail drawings of the various bits and bobs on the prototype along with some 1/48th plans.
They seem to have all the correct detail, like the extended oil radiator, early rudder balance guard and even the provision for a tail parachute.
Boy do I need to get out more...
