The Ongoing Mystery Aircraft Thread Part Deux.

Something a wee bit different - spending a bit of time on Google Earth, I found this outside a European air museum. Are those canards ? What is it ?

Location was the Italian Air Force Museum at Vigna di Valle. I reckon the basic machine is a Fiat, but which ?

After much gnashing of teeth and interminable waiting for the museum web-page to load, I'm going to posit that it's the Fiat G-59 which was taken in for restoration in 2013.

I'm bothered by the one 'tank' under the left wing, which is too far outboard. The "canards' may just be image artifacts or open cowling parts. The white colouring may be off-colour imaging as the a/c should be coming out in a high-gloss silver paint.

In viewing the historical images on GE the only one that shows this a/c is the latest (5/2020).

I looked through the rest of the collection (argh! Italian internet was not good) but any of the other suspects were not close matches for size - although the GE measuring tool is not that precise below about 100 ft /30m

Also of note, the museum pages don't even list the PD-808 or P-166 that are located near the gate :dizzy:

Thanks Rob - I'm sure you are correct on this one. I thought about cowling parts, but all the Fiat photos I've found show regular cowlings hinged at the top !

Sadly we no longer have an Italian contributor to check it for us , so let's carry on, eh ? Over to you Rob :icon29:

Thanks for the ale! It might even be warm enough to enjoy one outdoors today.
However, since it might be warm, it's also Honey-do Spring List so I'll have to throw the door open to all.
:indecisiveness:

It is the V.61, the last construction of the LFG company before being sold to Rohrbach.

The "sister ships" were the V.59 with a BMW engine.

Over to you, Mike :icon29:

That's because it was later fitted with a Farman engine rather than the original Lorraine. (see the Wiki entry)
Over to you, Robert :very_drunk:

Thanks, Mike, missed that completely.

Here is a similar looking aircraft.
