The Ongoing Mystery Aircraft Thread Part Deux.

Was thinking it was something French at first but not sure now.

To echo & Co, Merry Christmas to you all! :santahat:

And greetings from the North too - have a lovely relaxing Christmas everybody ! :santahat::santahat::santahat: :scotland::friday:

Haven't had much time to look at this one and am ashamed not to get a supposedly easy floater first time. Looks more Brit than French but has lots of Fokkery bits too. Back to the kitchen - am doing the big meal for 8 neighbours tomorrow. (The Boss is shining up the house)

As a matter of interest, here is my menu for the troops tomorrow :-

Rillette of Poached, Smoked and Hot-Smoked Salmon with Creme Fraiche, Dill & Capers

Roast Norfolk Turkey with Chestnut, Apricot & Celery stuffing
Roast King Edward potatoes
Wine-spiced Red Cabbage
Roast Parsnips in Maple Syrup
Brussels Sprouts braised in Marsala with Pancetta, Chestnuts and Parsley
Chipolata sausages
Bread Sauce
Cranberry & Orange relish

Christmas Pudding (Lefty's own) with Brandy Cream Sauce
or
Sherry Trifle (a wicked one made by one of my neighbours)

Cheeseboard.

Nautilus Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc
Mitchell Peppertree Clare Valley Shiraz
Dow's 1963 port
Assorted Liqueurs and Highland Malts.

There's still a spare place at the table !

PS This particular menu is not for WeightWatchers.

Don't know, Ferry, struts, float bracing etc like a C.IV

Tail markings - Romania ? Spain ? Give up.

:icon29: for Lefty!

My book lists it as a C.V E, but it's Swedish designation is the S.6H.

Interesting Blimp connection for Ralf : "Lieutenant Einar Lundborg rescued the Italian General Umberto Nobile in 1928, with a S 6B, equipped with skis. Nobile was on an ice shelf after his airship Italia had crashed on its way to the North Pole."

Yes, poor old Nobile. He didn't really want to be rescued, being Commander of the stranded expedition, but Lundborg insisted on taking him because he was the most badly injured of all survivors from the Italia. He was thus obliged to go, leaving several of his men, and subsequently ostracised, still arguing his case right up till his death in 1978. On the other hand, that got him away from association with Mussolini & the fascists, whom he'd never supported. He was truly 'noble by name and noble by nature' (and a character in that airship flight I once did up the Nile, some of you may recall).

Found this strange old photograph which seems to be topical, something to do with Christmas (do THE RULES allow parachutists?) :scotland::unitedsta::unitedkin::nnetherlan: :snowman:

(No apologies for the Dutch flag being bigger - it just is!)

Here he is, the sad man who goes on the internet on :santahat: Christmas Day :snowman: - worse, POSTS on it. Thanks for your good sense of humour about the Christmas Bullet card, Mike; still genuinely impressed by your jumping out of aeroplanes and remember your description of admiring the classics parked below that you were hurtling towards! Was it at East Fortune? (No, perhaps that isn't an operational airfield any more?).

Ralf has received two aviation books (from Mrs RR & that big river in South America which most Christmas presents now seem to flow from), which will be described in our Books sub-forum in due course... Hope you've all got some aircrafty books too!

As Tiny Tim said, God bless us, every one! :ernae:

[Sister-in-Law's for lunch later. She's a brilliant cook, but there are two very naughty nephews (aged 8 and 5) to counterbalance the feast. Anyway, they'll be busy breaking their new toys while the grown-ups are watching Dr Who and Wallace & Grommit.]

Well, it has to come out every year. Below is the one I sometimes put onto a WW2 submarine site. I know it's Ferry's turn to post a mystery aircraft, but you may be interested to learn that this picture is NOTHING WHATSOEVER TO DO WITH CHRISTMAS. Can anybody explain it?

Morning all - hope you all had a great day - we certainly did, and no discernible after-effects so far !

Just to clarify Ralf's comments, my parachuting was mostly done at Strathallan Airfield in Perthshire, which at the time was home to the amazing Roberts Collection, sadly broken up in the 80's. Doubt if any individual will ever again amass such a collection - Hurricane, Lysander, Bolingbroke, Lancaster,Mosquito, Firefly,GA Cygnet, R&S Desford, Short Scion, Comet, Sycamore, etc etc etc. Oh that it were still there, or that I had taken photos at the time - too obsessed with the jumping.

(By the way, the Comet flew into Strathallan, and landed on the grass strip !)

Right, back to business, think it's my turn. What is this ?

Sorry, Ralf, didn't pick up your post somehow first time.

Haven't a clue about your floating forest !

That's Adalbert Schnee's U-boat, the U-201. 'Schnee' being German for 'Snow', so that's how he got the nickname 'Snowman'.
"On his seventh patrol he sank ships for a total of 41,036 tons, and for this achievement was awarded the Oak Leaves to his Knights Cross." Iguess his men decorated his boat for him to celebrate?

Hope you all had a nice Christmas!

I'm pretty sure Lefty's gull wing is a Blohm & Voss Ha 137 A-0.

It certainly is ! A Friday night refreshment for you :icon29: (well it is here) Welcome back to these parts, Kevin - good Christmas ?

Thanks Lefty. Yes, had a good Christmas. Always nice to spend time with family. The kids about wore us out though. It's fun how excited they get. Daddy just needed a good nap to recover!

Moving along, here is a 2-seat trainer for you all-

:medals: to Ferry for Schnee. They stopped off on the Belgian coast & got some oak branches to decorate U201.

Wonder where the Strathallan/Roberts Collection went? You were lucky to see it when it was still in tact, Mike. I would not like to land a Comet on grass. Already found out the hard way about trying to take one off from too short a strip.

For various reasons, I suspect that Mo's latest might be Russian?
