Now we know what they mean by a 'backyard special'....... Did it fly ? Really ?? What's even more unlikely, did it float ?

Not sure what it did Mike as information is difficult to find. As best I can tell there is a engine buried in the fuselage powering the twin props via belts.

The design team built a previous aircraft that seems to be even more obscure!

What is obvious is the name of the machine as it is clearly painted on the tail in the original photo.

This afternoon I've been up more blind alleys than I care to admit and every time I find myself coming back to François Denhaut. Now I'm sure that I'm going to be told that this curious machine, with its rather piscatorial appearance, has nothing whatsoever to do with him. But I'll ask the question nonetheless before I run up the white flag!

Not a Denhaut effort. This canot-volant was built for the military circa 1913, but I think they moved on to something else after their design did not perform well. It had a 60hp motor of unknown type.

The Seine? It would have thought it was something from the banks of the Somme - in particular from the loft of the home of M. Jules Verne.
If you ever get the opportunity, his home in Amiens (now a well-kept museum) is certainly worth a day of an aerophile's life to visit.
