'Ugly Trend: Too Many Arguments & Too Little Fun'

Panther_99FS

Retired SOH Administrator
Yes,
I've been away from simming for about 2.5 years but I do pop my head in from time-to-time. And what I've seen is disturbing & depressing. It appears to me that the days of camaraderie & fun simming are gone. What's replaced them are ugly wars in words & lack of respect.

Remember, we all got into this because of the pure fun of it - let's not forget our roots (remember those days) and get back to the pure fun of flight simming
. :mixedsmi:

I'm afraid it is a symptom of the times my friend. Money is in short supply, hobbies are under threat, tensions rise and so on we go...

I am still unsure just how the world got into this state but it has. If we are not careful we will enter a new "dark ages".

Also, the internet has traditionally been a place for cyber bullies to hide ( these are people who in real life would cross the road rather than face you) and live their lives vicariously through avatars and forum membership where anonymity is their friend. They pay for nothing and give nothing back for what they take. Unfortunately the virtual world is overrun with them and they will ultimately destroy this "world" we inhabit.

Of course, turn the power off and they magically disappear!:icon_lol:

Nice to see you about Panther.

Demands and expectations exceed supply. Few seem happy and some go ballistic over the smallest imperfection. However I believe our SOH spirit will bring us through because what we all do is sim and this is what SOH is about...simming.

Milton and friends Tracker and Avia projects are great examples of SOH spirit. Lots of talented people working together (and having fun doing it) for the good of all. :ernae:

Looks like Ed has given us some insight as to how things appear on the outside. I also agree there are to many who expect perfection but contribute nothing. Most of us know who these people are and of course they know who they are.

This forum has always been special since my joining in 2005. I remains special because even with the once in a while argument. The fun part of our hobby is still there. With economic times being tough everyone can manage to find an aircraft and take a flight for a little escape from reality.

Part of the fun for me is developing things for our community. This forum is full of the same kind of people. This is a major part of why SOH is so special. Seeing what other are developing for us is a pure joy. It gives anticipation and something to look for down the road.

The people that cause trouble are everywhere in all avenues of life. They are a very small part of society. I am a new moderator here and will do my best to keep an eye on those who cause problems. If they don't respond, their post and threads will be gone. If they continue the administrators will ban them. These are the facts as I see them. Enough preaching and back to having fun. You are all a great bunch to be associated with.

I would not be overly concerned Panther....there are those who are determined to act boorish no matter what the circumstance.

Since we are on online community, and can be anonymous to an extent, the darker sides of peoples personalities will float to the surface more often.

So, people will say things online that they would never think of saying to you in person.

I wouldn't sweat it too much. The good far outweighs the bad.

Admittedly, there have been more than few arguments I didn't mind getting into. You're right about some of these arguments going way beyond the scope of FSX and detracting from an overall great community and fantastic hobby that just keeps getting better. As Roger pointed out, the good will always prevail, such as those like Diego and others.

Teasea, smack me on my head or kick me in the 4th point of contact if I get too out of control. Too much testosterone at work and home.

I think for all our faults, real, and Imaginary,we collectively a good people.True, some of us stray a bit,an ego problem inherent to pilots, again real or imaginary...I know I have, and always reflect afterwards, often sorry,..Its when behavior has a pattern,of incompatbilty, and the person doing it does not know he is..Well, a good kick in the butt works..often followded by a "Thanx I Needed That"We are afterall diverse, international, language, sayings, beliefs different, and yet held together by a great hobby,a game as it were,Desk Top Flight Simming!.Our Miracle!!.The world collectvally can learn much from us!.I futher think,we are indivuals ,and not programed behavioral freaks...I always maintained,we are missing the REAL HANGER FACTOR,we,snuggled in anonymity great distances, not looking in the eye whom we are addressing,in a milli sec in cyber space, sometimes we miss!...I wonder if we were BSing, over coffee and donuts,a glass of beer, observing body language, what we would look like....I think we would look like what we are..a bunch of kids having fun...Grown up stuff..YUCK!,But like kids,we do have "ELDERS"...the Mods here, who regularly slide down the razor of judgment!.....Again all and all,Who would give this up???? Certainly not I...CHEERS MEN!...Vin<label for="rb_iconid_7">

Okay, for those not following (quite understandable, lol) that would be one of the P-51C's from the Warbirdsim "Fighter Leader" product...and I guess I'd be "Mr. T" ; )

Hey, screw you!

Nah. Nice to see you again bud! Honestly. I do concur. I tend to post less and less because I don't want to be dragged into a problem. I must say however that I don't plan on going anywhere soon. I'm always lurking. :D I rather overall still enjoy this place, and it is one of the only forums I am still active in.

I don't normally join these kinds of pow wows. Just to give you some perspective, my view of the SOH and its value is all business. It's about know-how - usually picking up and learning more than I can contribute but if I can provide a (rare) answer to help someone out of a problem, that is a good feeling. It's a knowledge exchange. The relatively few that let themselves get drawn into squabbles, cause offence and the mods to intervene I don't pay much attention to. Anyone who has driven hours with young children squabbling on the back seat knows how to just tune it out. The admins and mods here are doing a very good job. Keep up the good work.:salute:

I have noticed that when people get older (and I am familiar with that the process somewhat) they tend to see more of the bad things around them and start comparing more with 'how things were' for some reason. They also have more trouble accepting change.

Personally I wouldn't worry too much. There are still LOTS of friendly people around in the hobby and the hobby in itself is still flourishing, despite attempts of destroying it by MS (grinning... see what I mean !!??) .

I think you'll just have to ignore more of the 'new style' users and accept that the new generations are spoilt by us providing them with too much too easy. Looks like the world is changing that back a bit now, so who knows.. maybe you get ALL your 'good old times' back one day.
I am pretty sure we're not gona like THAT either ! ;-)

Meanwhile, it is a matter of selecting your friends and communities carefully, and make an effort to keep them 'friendly'...... that'll do it nicely for me. :wavey:

Ehi guys.
i do not know anymore if i read all the posts in SOH because i like flightsimming or if i like flightsimming because i'm everyday here in SOH. Here i find people that have my interests, i find more that i can give, but it intrigues me as fs does. Coming back here after a flight is the same as stepping inside that pub just out the airfield, doesn't matter if it is near a huge hub or in a desperate lonely land.
Thanks to everyone here.
