vertigo studios aircraft carrier

Yorktown gave it her all in the Battle of Coral Sea..and got back into the fight at Midway - before going down

It sure would be great to have a tribute to that effort of both her crew and the Lady CV-5

Before another Yorktown class, which we already have in FSX, I would like to see something not yet done. My vote:

1. Lexington class (CV-2, 3)
2. Angle deck Essex.
3. Straight deck Essex.
4. Any "super carrier" besides Nimitz, which we already have a nice example of.
5. Wasp (CV-7)
6. Ark Royal
7. Japanese big carriers, Akagi, Kaga, Shokaku.

I have a Yorktown class carrier already modeled, but its a little "heavy" for FSX. Currently in at about 15 million polygons....

For WWII stuff, York or Enterprise. The Big E was a Yorktown class. Korea, I would say Midway class. You can have it with and without angled deck, and there is still a Midway class available for referances in San D.

That looks awesome!

Big E or Midway class.

Nailed it ! Midway it must be , has the character in respect to the Island and a deck near the size of the Forrestal,s , they indeed not dissimilar to the Nimitz <input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden">

I like the USS Midway with angle deck.
What is really rare and missing from Fs is Canada's Carrier the HMCS Bonnie. Will call this a wedge between the UK and US:d

Widcat, Hellcat, SBD, Yorktown. But, with Bearcat coming we should have a carrier for all, so, a WWII straight deck carrier.

Has anyone ever done a U.S.S. Saratoga?

Yes

Our own PutPut did

FSX Scenery--USS Saratoga CV-3. This is a true FSX scenery object compiled with Xtomdl. It features an exact shape hard deck for carrier ops with airplanes equipped with rcbco-30 (not included). It also has a smoke effect, ship wake and a rotating beacon. A night texture is included for night carrier ops. It is located just outside Pearl Harbor. The files necessary to move it to other locations with the FSX SDK Bglcomp program are included. By Paul Clawson.

[/SIZE] A very challenging carrier to land on.

I vote for any carrier with a straight deck.

Could you do a late-WW2 straight-deck carrier that's also big enough to accommodate 50's jets?

Since you're doing an F9F Panther and other similar planes in the future, this seems to make a lot of sense. :) I assume some of the WW2 carriers were handling jets in Korea.

Boxer was, as was Essex, BHR, Princeton (mainly helos), Valley Forge, Philippine Sea, other lesser touring vessels were Leyte, Antietam and Lake Champlain. Quite a few served in Korea with WWII weapons fit, the rest had more modern weapons.

All Essex carriers in Korea had slightly revised bridge structures, the ins and outs of the subtle differences are far too great for this medium, as are tours of duty or aircraft allocations and squadron deployments, besides I don't have four days spare to write it all out :).

To dispel some common myths about Essex carriers in Korea, angle decks were not used, nor were steam catapults, only hydraulic cats were used. Some Essex carriers had steam catapults toward the end of the conflict but did not serve in the conflict.

Sounds like the straight-deck Essex would be the logical choice to accompany Vertigo Studios' products then! Thanks for the info, Michael.

The Essex class USS Intrepid served in WWII - I believe in Korea - and then in SEA with the converted angle deck. This (there would be one carrier with two models) would satisfy many wanting a carrier for WWII aircraft, Korea (F9F Panther fans) and the many FS a/c that fit the Viet Nam era.

Intrepid did not serve in Korea, she entered yards in 1951 and exited in 1954 after her SCB27C refit.

Intrepid did tow or three tours in Vietnam in 66 and 67, tail code AK was aboard.

Essex was not the same vessel in Korea and WWII, she was refitted in 1948/50 SCB27A which included a revised bridge structure and hurricane bow.

The only pure dual conflict Essex carrier is Bon Hom Richard.

Antietam served in basic unmodified form in Korea, as did Princeton, but neither served in WWII.

As I said previously the combinations, hull types, weapons fits viz conflicts is a mine field, it'd be almost impossible to find one vessel to suit several eras, thats why I built seven of them (Essex, Yorktown, Shangri La - WWII / Boxer Leyte - Korea...no short hull yet, Essex was the only short hull to serve in Korea but requires the Korea mesh to be extensively modernized.. / Oriskany, Ticonderoga - Vietnam), each specific to an era or style, and that doesn't include the rest of angled deck varaints, long/short hull, chimed or smooth bow from the mid 50s onward and into Vietnam and after.

I's love to have some very detailed carrier of WW2

Enterprise
Hornet
Yorktown

Secondly, although there is FSX modelled USS Gerald R. Ford, It not well modeled. No animations, not working with FSX default cats/traps

I'd love to have this one done ;)

Cheers

Just seven?? Slacker. :) :)

(Good Grief, Man!)

Not hard when you consider its been a ten year research program and at least two years building in Gmax and then all over again for four years in Max LOL. My personal view is that the Essex class is so important in history that to go off half cock will be an injustice to the class and those who served. We wouldn't accept aircraft from these eras with even the smallest of errors, yet we readily accept carriers where the only difference is the number on the deck, totally ignoring the rest of the vessel.

I made a promise to some guys on another forum to get a beta free copy of the most advanced WWII version out, it simply needs some basic materials and textures so that people can at least play with something semi authentic, no detailed textures, just basic colors, I'll try and do that over the next few days for those who want to play with Essex carriers. They all have hard decks and cat and trap capabilities and all will go in the sim and have been in the sim already. The detailed texture work will have to come later at a slower pace, theres an awful lot of it to do as you may well imagine !.

There were tentative plans to package a WWII Essex with Aeroplane Heavens Wildcat, but despite many long hours of frustraited research we could not find any authentic situations where Wildcats served on Essex carriers in WWII in combat unfortunately.
