• We have to do a little server maintenance that will take the forums off line for an about 2-3 hours. Right now we are planning for Sunday night 9:00 PM May 25

The Catalina X is finally released.

Anyone willing to do a SAAF repaint for me?

Not really - i do thave this from Ron Bellings book:
Notes on the finish
A few machines were finished in the 1940 - 1941 Temperate Sea scheme of Extra dark sea grey and Dark Slate with Sky undersides. They had B and C1 roundels, 24 x 24 in (610mm x 610mm) fin flashes and a White code letter on the fin.

The later maritime scheme (AMO A664 1942/1943) which prescribed White undersides and Extra Dark Sea Grey top surfaces for the Sunderlands, was also adopted by the Catalinas, but the Temperate Sea scheme was retailed on their top surfaces. This finish appeared on a number of 35 squadrons Catalinas. In hte case of one of these ( FP228, which was seen over Port Elizabeth) the code letter (g) was in Black.

In contrast to the White undersides which had become stained, its lower hull, which was finished in a protective Zinc Chromate, had been marked by harbour oil and dirt.

The White, which tended to be to bright for aircrew was overpainted - mainly around the motor nacelles and cockpit. in the case of this example a coat of dark Blue Grey had been applied to those areas at a later stage.

If the white paint was too bright for the aircrew, one would think the underside of those engines should be painted dark as well.

I got a question.. Has anyone been able to cruise at 120 knots in this thing yet?? I cant get it over 110...makes it slower than a cessna..:(

Didja read the manual? Lots of stuff there about things that affect your power. I did the CD version. It was here in a couple of days. Took the time to read the full manual although the appendix on navigation and flight planning will take a bit of study. This is one of those 'back to ground school" birds to fully exploit all that Aerosoft built in. Have flown it a couple of times, mostly to learn to watch my oil and cylinder head temps.:icon_lol: Aerosoft has climbed to the top of my payware manufacturers list.

Just need a Condor now to duplicate that N. Atlantic dogfight from "Into the hands of fate." book. What a great sim model!! :medals::medals:

Have any of these great new paint jobs been uploaded anywhere? i see some really nice ones and i am getting the cat and would love to try some new paints on her.

Cruise speeds are:

107 kts => 28 inHg MAP, 2050 RPM, Auto lean, Cowlflaps closed
113 kts => 30 inHg MAP, 2050 RPM, Auto rich, cowlflaps closed.

The Catalina was one of the slowest aircraft during WW2 !

Me too - we might have trouble finding all these great repaints while Avsm is disabled.

The first Norwegian Catalina unit started as a detachment of Coastal Command's No. 210 Squadron in early 1942 at Woodhaven in Scotland. The flight was soon established as a separate unit, given the designation No. 1477 (Norwegian) Flight. The first Catalina was named "Vingtor" and had the name and a small Norwegian service flag painted on the nose. It retained the codes, QL-R, from its previous operator, No.413 Squadron, RCAF. On 10 May 1943 the flight gained squadron status and was redesignated to No.333 (Norwegian) Squadron. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" /><o:p></o:p>
Vingtor as part of the Aerosoft release, masterly painted by Dag, show it in the later 333 (N) Sqn years. I have worked on a repaint of how Vingtor looked back in 1942 and part of 1477 Flight. It started out as a simple change the code letter, but turned out into a lot more work. In the end the camo scheme was completely redrawn, including extending down to the lower part of the back end of the seaboat hull.

A quick question:

Is the Cat installable on more than one computer? I as as this is a big consideration as I travel about half the time and being able to install on both my "mainframe" and laptop is a essential requirement.

Cheers: T.

Sure, we are very relaxed on these things.

Is it hard to do photoreal paints with this bro? I'd like to eventually do one also but if it's one of those puzzle type paint kits, I'll probably stay away. Great job on them man! :ernae:

Puzzle Bob,puzzle..Can be done though but not many good photos around
to work with.

Question pls;how do you get in and out of this airplane ?..I don,t see any functional exit in the front part of the fuselage. Any special animations and special features that i missed ? No mention of any in the manual .. Like wheel chocks , covers, removing the crew after shutdown and such. I recall seeing a screenshot of a PBY anchored and tied by a floating bowie ? Was it for a different model ?

Most entry was through the fuse blisters via a ladder when on the ground on beaching gear (-5) or landing gear _5a)

Some such as this one pictured had entry/exit door in the ventral area

You could also enter thru the nose turret when moored to a buoy.

At first glance, I'd assume that not having a hatch in the lower part of the fuselage might to a long way towards keeping it watertight, too. Just one more seal not to have to deal with.
