AH Hawker Hurricane MK1 Released 5/2

Thanks for doing McKnight's LE-A, Jankees. I had that one lined up to do myself. I will still correct a few errors you inherited from the AH base paint, like the fuselage roundel proportions and position, but this is a nice job and usable as-is.

I've tried to find a good picture of the real aircraft, showing the location of the roundels, and I wanted to show it with Bader's LE-D, so I went for the scheme of around september 1940, so without the sky band on the fuselage, and the black spinner.

I did find a pic with smaller roundels, sky band and spinner, from June 1941 of LE-A, but by then McKnight had been killed

I'm having a problem with the new version. I haven't tried all default liveries yet, just the G-ZL, but there, the rudder trim no
longer seems to work, and no matter how much deflection I put on the rudder trim knob, the plane always seems to roll to
the right. I kept a copy of the original version, re-installed, and this was not a problem there. Am I doing something wrong?

Also on the new version, where the fabric part meets the solid part on the sides , with the 8k textures, there are now some thin
bright white lines at the seams, quite visible in bright sunlight. Again, I've only tried the G-ZL On the other hand, the new 8k
textures sure do pop.

Nothing that can't be fixed. Just thought I would mention to see if anyone else is noticing this. I really do like the plane.
 
Different researches have drawn different conclusions regarding McKnight's Hurricane. Vintage Wings of Canada did a lot of research before painting its Mk.XII, but I disagree with some of their conclusions.

They opted for a scheme from between Nov. 1940, when the sky fuselage bands and spinner were applied, and Jan. 1941, when McKnight was killed. They are likely correct that P2691 received the sky spinner and band during that period. However, McKnight wasn't very active and wasn't scoring kills during that period, so I agree with you that Sept. 1940 is the more appropriate time to depict the aircraft.

Personally, I think that the roundel would have been repainted as the 35-in Type A1 rather than being left as the 35-in Type A with a 40-in yellow disc, if indeed it ever wore that roundel. I am not convinced that the squadron's aircraft in Sept. 1940 still looked like they did during the Battle of France, when the pics of P2959 in VWC's research were taken. I think that both the roundel and fin flash were reduced in size by then. That's what I went with for the model I built, which is meant to represent the Sept. 1940 time frame.

One thing for sure, the proportions of the blue, white, and red circles are wrong on the AH and the roundel on Hurricanes was always painted low on the fuselage, within a couple of inches of the upper/lower paint boundary. So that's one thing I'll correct on your skin, also I'll substitute the unusual "A" code shape which is one of the few things actually documented about P2961. Whether to put the boot-kicking-Adolf motif on the cowling is another point of controversy. Vintage Wings decided to put it on theirs, but I don't believe there is evidence that it appeared on any airplane other than LE-D and it might be a Bader personal marking rather than a squadron marking.

Very nice paints Jan. Any chance we could have a version of LE-A without the boot kicker? I'm not saying instead of, but as well as... since its provenance seems unknowable from what was posted above.

I'm surprised that two days later, and Just Flight still doesn't have the update for the Hurricane available yet. The P-47 update seemed instantaneous when that was released.

Does Avangel read this forum ?

I thought she was quite a bit unfair with her initial review of AH's Hurricane, mixing up 'sprayed-on' camouflage paint with low res textures and such things, IMHO enough to warrant a comment about that here. With her secondary review she is surprisingly more or less raving about it now !

May well be because of the upgrade indeed (haven't installed it yet) but i secretly kinda hope my comment about Avangel's IMHO unfair initial review may have had some influence... :sneaky:
