AS F-4 Phantom

gray eagle

SOH-CM-2025
There..., an official thread has been started for the Freeware Alpha Sim F-4.

I have been making some changes to the NAVY pack 1 and so far, I have a nice engine start up effect (smoke). Recently, I posted a J79 sound here. Since then, I have made slight edits to some of the
start up sound files. The AS version doesn't have quite the effect (movement) as brand X's turkey feathers. Don "fxsttcb" Bodenstedt has provided a decent panel fix.
Conversion to FSX by Bob Chicilo.

There are plenty of repaints for the AS version over at FlightSim....oh, and did I say, they are free. :untroubled:

Thanks GE - I was going to resurrect the old threads on this - but I guess a new one is fine.

For posterity / ease of searching sake, it might be good to alter the thread title to include "Virtavia" and "FSX portover" - as Alphasim did two rounds of Phantoms over the years, one set for CFS2/2002/2004, and the much better set for FS2004 that has been ported by Don et al to which you refer. Since both are freeware, someone visiting their freeware site may get confused ...

It might be worth adding some links to mods/past discussion on this, as this has all been gone over before:

For everyone's benefit, the AS/V Phantom in discussion came in 3 packs, with these aircraft models/paints:

Pack 1
F-4J Phantom II VF-114
F-4J Phantom II VMFA-333
F-4B Phantom II VF-51 CAG
F-4B Phantom II VF-111

Pack 2
F-4C 45th TFS/2nd AD
F-4D 435th TFS/8th TFW
F-4E 421st TFS
F-4E 61st TFW IRIAF
F-4F JG 71 "Richthofen"
F-4EJ 301Sqd 5th A.W.
F-4G 561 F.S.

Pack 3
FGR.1 No.111 Sqn. RAF
RF-4E Greek Air Force RIAT 2005
FG.1 (F-4K) Royal Navy
FGR.2 No.56 Sqn. RAF
RF-4C 363rd TRW USAF
F.Mk.3 74 Sqn. Tiger Meet Cameri Italy July 1988
RF-4C 38th TRS 26 TRW USAF c.1971
FGR.2 92 Sqn. RAF 1991
F-4J(UK) Clean
RF-4E (Clean)

Pack three is, in my view, the best in FSX - it ports with the least issues, and of course - there's the RF-4 ... what more do I need to say? :running:

Packs 1/2 are pretty good (Go Don! Sorry for confusing you and Henk!) In "clean" config, the VC looks good. If tank models are selected, though, there are some little windows to the exterior. Again, it's a port - small niggles here and there ...

Some key repainters' work I VERY MUCH recommend: note - these are FS9 repaints

  • Steve Bryant - our own "Duckie" - USN/USMC paints that simply rock.
  • Markus Hellwig - our own "Wild Bill Kelso" - not posting much these days - but did some great paints, esp German ones
  • Michael Pearson - the man is a production machine - prodigious amount of paints ...
  • Gus Robatto - as outlined by Expat already. Simply stunning repaints done almost a decade ago - and still look good.
  • Pierre Lheureux - did some really nice photorealistic work. He did some lovely oddball Phantoms .... I miss him ...
  • Frank Safranek - I think we know who he is ... :) Lots of great repaints from him too - most on his website and here.

I know I've missed a bunch - but just to get the AS/V Phantom newbies up to speed.

Link one and two nonfunctional.

Some pictures of improvements

This is captures of both engines just as they are starting up. I added the effects that you see.

As vf-111

Some pics of the AB at work. Thing of it is, originally the ab effect was hooked up to entry in lights section so when you hit the "L" key, the burner would come on or go off just like
is was a light. Had to make the AB independent and pop on when throttle was pushed up.

All of a sudden we are "flooded with Phantoms"! I am loving it. It's like getting them for the first time, all over again, but they (both the AS and C9) are new and improved!!!:encouragement:

Tomorrow I shut down and pack up my desktop pc for a few weeks, until I get resettled in Pensacola. Am headed there this weekend for about a week (having new windows installed), and getting internet service established.

I can only imagine how many changes will have taken place by the time I am flight simming again, sometime in late July!:jump:

regarding the afterburners

Question for Gray Eagle, you mentioned having to take the burner effects out of "Lights" and place them independently to come when the throttle is up. I would be curious as to how you did that, a manipulation of the aircraft.cfg I assume. I have several of my favorite freeware (Kirk Olsson's F-16's for example) birds, including the above mentioned F-4s, that I'd like to fix that. I have some knowledge of manipulation .cfg files, but not sure how to go about doing what you described. any suggestions would be appreciated...

I sent you a PM.

Gray Eagle - will the fix you have stated work in FS9? I would also like to fix up the AB effects in my FS9 AS F-4s. I have all three packs.
Thanks.

Soooo....
Which iteration of this critter doesn't have holes in the VC? Wee bit of a deal-breaker....;)

I'd had this years ago...probably abandoned it for the same reason...just dug it out again to see if any porting/mods had improved on it.
Here's what it looks like [FSX Accell]..am cycling through the models to see if any show the panel as non-transparent/missing....;)

Looking for a repaint of the Thunderbird F-4 Phantom

I'm looking for a repaint for the Thunderbird F-4 Phantom without weapons attached. I have the AS phantom collection now in FS9 running in FSX. Can anybody help? I need it to complete my collection of Thunderbirds. Thanks

Holey VC

Packs 1 and 2 have hole issues - depending on which model gets selected -some do, some don't. Pack 3 has no hole issues.

BTW - there are also holes further down - lower side panels area - not just straight ahead.
