City Textures rework

The ? is that also effects the seas, which for me is not as bad as 'surf' in rivers
I agree, would this be one of the Cfs3h2o textures?

The surf is a great source of irritation for me as it is not static and appears from under my modular harbour sections as you fly across them.

Yeah, it's the Cfs3h2os file which is not in the effects folder but in cfs3stex.zip in the terrains folder. I roughly reduced the surf in the texture and it's a definite improvement to the river appearance and my dock models. I haven't yet checked the coastline. I will refine this maybe create a smoother coastline and hopefully it wont look too weird. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I will upload the modded texture soon so that you can check it out.

I have made a reworked shoreline texture. Actually, I went overboard and made 32 different versions of it to reflect different levels of tide and intensities of surf. Here is a middle of the road sort of version.

The water portion of the textures is handled exclusively by fading out the shoreline via the alpha channel, with white waves added on top. That way, no matter the color of the water, it will match.

Also, for those of us not terribly familiar with the Thames docks, what actually goes on at these places? The shapes and sizes do not make any sense to me if you're trying to load and move ships through efficiently, particularly that maze where the river turns a corner. They could build the docks any shape they wanted and they chose that?! Even with tugs this seems like a nightmare.

Note this isn't a critique of your work, I just don't understand how it works in the real world.

Think of barges, and a network of canals and rivers linking major cities to supplement railroad traffic.

I have made a reworked shoreline texture.

I like this texture Daniel, though I must apologize for fiddling with it. I've scaled the thickness a bit. The river and sea shoreline looks smoother at altitude, as it should.

That old surf shoreline really dampened my enthusiasm to work on the docks, that has changed now though. Thanks guys for the input.

I thought that the seemingly chaotic design of Surrey commercial dock was a development of existing wetlands, but no, it was totally man made, built from scratch and developed over the years. I blame it on the mercury used to stiffen felt hats worn at the time.:D

I received the following from Ankor,

"I don’t remember how materials are set up in gmax, but looking at the equations in shaders I guess it should be non-metallic (phong?), with specular at 80% in material settings and full white specular texture."

However, he also said there are significant differences in the shaders for how the water is rendered vs 3D models, so there is no perfect solution here.

No problem with you modifying my texture, but it does look like you've got a couple waves that look like they're were sliced through with a knife and might appear in the wrong spot. Dividing the width of the texture into four equal sections will show where everything will be displayed. Everything appearing in the left half of and of those four sections will be on land.

R,
That looks much better with less white 'breaking' wave shorelines. TBH there shouldn't be any, as it's a slow wide river with very little drop. And yes the Thames has a very smoothe river bank, as there's a lot of silting in the Thames, the result of the London Clay and sand underneath, along with the silt being brought up the Thames from the North Sea. It being tidal all the way to the Thames Barrier.

Unfortunately we're stuck with having to compromise. The same shoreline texture is used everywhere, so it has to look ok as an ocean shoreline too.

I tried blinn and metallic, the only one I didn't try was phong, typical.

Yeah, a quick fix, that's just me working too quickly. It's barely noticeable in the DDS file but I converted it to a jpg when I uploaded it. Good that you noticed it.

I forgot my manners, thank you Daniel for the info yesterday, it's nice that Ankor is still available to offer advice.

I got sidetracked by this, adding a river bank to central London. I must be careful about adding too many new objects as I have yet to add more ships and cranes to the dock areas.

A great video I came across this week, Rick Beato's youtube channel is worth a visit, featuring interviews with Sting, Pat Metheney, Ingwie Malmsteen and many others.

Leading on from the above vid:

Ooops! I almost forgot, this is a modified version of Daniel's Shoreline texture that I'm using. Back up your original just in case.

Yeah, I've taken a bit of a break from this project to do some placement work for Bob's Leyte gulf project.

A while back I did create the Katherine and Western docks next to the tower which included anew port building model.

Absolutely amazing work, just astounding, there just isn't enough adjectives to explain how great this looks.
