City Textures rework

Cool! I'm loving seeing the now obsolete infrastructure (thinking also of the gas holders) coming to life. I don't think these often make it into recreations of this time period since many have never seen or heard of them, and we're left with a more familiar scene. These more unusual additions really take you back in time and will make it a unique experience.

I've updated the terrain map and replaced the grass texture with farmland at Dungeness.

Compared to present day Dungeness , the sound mirror area looked quite different in 1940, and today I almost created a mos texture of the present day lake to place in that area. Luckily I browsed 1940 images to be 100% sure. There was no lake back then so I saved myself some unnecessary work.

Clive's superb model is now in place, though I still need to edit out that bit of green to the left of the model.

I don't have CFS3 intalled, but I have to say these are stunning shots and it looks like WONDERFUL work!

Makes me want to dig around and see if I can find my old CD's over in storage!

Saludos!

I know the feeling, Ankor's latest shader pack is reason enough to dive into storage and retrieve those CDs.:)

Clive aka Pat Pattle placed the Dungeness texture and buildings as part of his Bob update, and they really make a great difference to the area, now along with his sound mirror models.

My 3.7inch flak gun(94mm) is almost complete. It still needs a damage texture and the vertical movement barrel gear is missing, situated towards the rear underside of the barrel housing.
I placed it on Fort Nothe, and it does train and fire on my me109. It needs to be dropped by a foot and a bit so that it rests on the fort. I did increase the scale slightly, I may reduce it again.

I will have to create a '0' altitude version for use at airfields, and another raised model for my breakwater fort.

I would think that short range, nimble, quick firing Bofors was used to protect airfields from low level fighter and fighter bomber attacks, whereas the longer ranged 3.7inch like the german 88mm would be used against slower higher altitude medium bomber attacks.

There was a recent thread on the skill levels of flak guns and rear gunners.
I n Johnnie Johnson's book ' Wing leader' , enemy flak was extremely dangerous when attacking German airfields with fighters on 'Rhubarb' missions. The pilots hated these almost suicidal missions and they were eventually stopped.
The airfields were attacked by zooming out of low cloud and attacking at low level to achieve the element of surprise. After the first run, the Germans were alerted and a second run would be met by viscous well planned crossfire. Obviously, the sim would not be able to replicate the initial element of surprise.

On long range bomber missions to Germany, the fighters rose to a higher altitude to protect their vulnerable fragile fighters much to the disgust of the Bomber pilots who had to continue on their pre-planned flight route through the flak.

I hate sniper bomber gunners, a problem in most sims, and usually drop bomber and fighter bomber skill levels in missions to reduce this effect.

'Wing leader', a brilliant book, is a must read for any ww2 flight enthusiast. I found my copy in a second hand book store years ago and it is a much read personal treasure. Now that I think about it a reread is overdue.

Had to post this piece, current listening and favorite. I'm also trying the first violin bit on my dad's violin, another hobby of mine. This 2nd movement of Mozart's k614 quintet is so beautiful in it's simplicity, and this recording by one of the best string quintets in Europe does it justice. Will listen to it again after writing this.:)

Truly fantastic work. CFS3 lives!

Sound detection for aerial threats originated in WW1 with a Commander Rawlinson who set up pairs of gramophone horns on rotating poles to locate Zeppelins for his AA battery. Others had the same idea as shown below.

More help to your project might the Luftwaffe Target photos, including many of the south coast which I found at the following in the later pics on : https://www.alamy.com/stock-photo/radar-station-ww2.html?sortBy=relevant.

Thanks for the link flashgordon, a lot of great resource pics there." Acoustic locator wearable", now I know where Walt Disney got his idea for Mickey Mouse.:costumed-smiley-046:ROFLMAO:

Cool! We don't have enough types of AA guns in game. Great to have another. Nice looking model. I agee it seems a bit large in the screenshots.

I just discovered that the 3.75 inch aa guns were positioned in the Fort Nothe car park during WW2. I;m assuming that it's the parking area alongside the harbour inlet just behind the fort.

I thought that the battlement positions were too small to house those guns and Googled the info,

Google ai also now states that the breakwater fort housed a single 40cal bofors gun, not quite the info that I googled when I was building the fort which I find quite strange. A 3.75 battery was placed on Verne hill, Portland island. Anyway, for now, I'll continue with Weymouth placements and complete the breakwater fort modeling.

As I was writing this Daniel posted his reply.

We must have a psychic connection because I was just pondering the size of the gun in relation to the fort gun positions which were built for coastal defense cannons. At least I have now learned where the guns should placed, and as you say we don't have enough AA gun types in the sim, so it wasn't a wasted effort. I will reduce the gun to it's original scale.

I finally installed Win10 on a newly purchased solid state drive... yeah, now that MS have discontinued support.:) I would have installed win11 but I have read that win10 with it's years of service is more stable. To be perfectly honest I installed it so I could finally play Blitzkrieg again after so many years of not being able to due to the of the lack of direct play on win7. I've ported all of my flight sims across and they work beautifully without stuttering because of the solid state's fast loading times when it comes to terrain loading. I still use my win 7 hard drive to do modding for now. This dinosaur can't believe how quickly the ssd starts up and loads stuff.:D
