Convair CV-580

While waiting, I flew the updated Calclassic CV-580 in IFL colors an actual Gulf and Caribbean Cargo flight "TSU 3810" from El Paso KELP to General Roberto Fierro Villalobos Intl Airport MMCU in real time/real weather. Nice hour and a half flight. Had to go around because as usual, the "canned" ATC in P3D isn't a bit better than FSX was and they bring you into the airport way too high and way too close. Managed to land myself VFR onto 36R. A little too fast but smooth landing anyway. Just had to use up the whole 7,400 foot of the runway and the brakes were a little too hot. Here is a screen shot. I chose Aeromexico as the cargo handler and it was cool to see that logo on the DPN cargo container as it was unloaded. In GSX if your aircraft is specified as "cargo" in customize aircraft menu, the latest GSX update gives you a load handler which you can see just deboarding the aircraft. I'm a bit left of the parking line because I got confused. The airport has a marshaller but he is an animated figure who constantly waves his arms no matter what you are doing and I followed him until I realized he wasn't an actual marshaller from GSX.

Did you use prop reverse thrust too?

I remembered it (F2) about half way down the runway. In the past I had it on my throttle quadrant but I haven't justified the $65USD for registered FSUIPC 6 for P3D yet so I just have the free version. Anyway it worked welll enough and I was not close to running off the runway before I stopped and exited it at the end onto Taxiway A to D and the Customs Hanger as specified on the MAS FBO airport charts they supply.

Hello,
Where can I find your aircraft
The Aircraft is still in development, it is not currently available. It will be available on SOH and 1 other site when it is completed however.

For the sounds, I'll take a look at those. Right now I'm recycling the sounds off the Electra and P-3 Projects I did. An accurate set for the 501s will be preferred.

I see the posts about maybe the stopping distance not being accurate perhaps. I will test this as well just in case, but based on what I've seen so far. With reverse pitch on landing it will stop pretty well without really needing the use of brakes. So far I've been flying my test field which has a 5500 foot runway. From what I've read, the runway requirement for them is between 4700-5000 feet depending. The tankers minimum is 5,000 feet with GTOW of 58,156lbs. This I will also verify. But I think it's close. MTOW on the 5800 is 63,000lbs, but with the more powerful engines, I doubt that take off distance is much greater, if at all.

I'm sure you are right and it was me. I came in hot and heavy because of that dumb default ATC that I had forgotten does that when you are following GPS. As far as the sounds, I've found Aaron to do a pretty accurate job from my experience in the past. Since I just downloaded these for me, I guess that a download link like I supplied would have to be supplied unless you got in touch with Aaron about including them since this is ALL FOR FREE AT SOH.

I've been going back and forth between the tankers and the 5800 since last night and added some more stuff to them. The antenna package was put on the spine of the 5800s today and I messed with textures a bit more as well. Added some other small things in. I also tested the takeoff distance and landing distances at MTOW and MLW (around 55,000lbs) and all seems good there. Figured I'd at least try it. With 18,000 lbs aboard and half fuel it can stop in around 3,000 feet if you're really toes down on the brakes and in full reverse. Which I feel is fairly accurate. Between the tanker and 5800, there's notable difference in takeoff performance, which is understandable given the extra power of the upgraded 501s the 5800 has over the standard 580. Other than that, not a whole lot of change externally looks wise, but here's a few photos regardless of the 5800.

Threw some of the updates at the Passenger variants late last night. Will work on adding some more things to the 131H here soon. And finally probably start messing with adding the Hamilton Standard prop variant to the passenger versions. Once those are done, I'll finally start on the actual 580F cargo variant.

I'm glad the project is eagerly awaited. It also helps doubly motivate me to keep on working on these sorts of projects. Plus it keeps aircraft like this, that are amazing and well put together, but may be a bit dated, and give them a longer life as it were I feel. Just boosts them a bit. I also greatly appreciate the added resources and tips. This also helps tremendously!

I did some more cosmetic updates to the passenger version and moved all the stuff over and did the Hamilton Standard propeller version passenger variant tonight as well as updated the same base stuff on the VC-131H. I also updated paints and did one for Westates Airlines for the new variant of the passenger version.

They all look really sharp especially that Navy bird.....

Thank you everyone! I am writing out notes of other stuff to do with these. Since I made a pseudo-paint kit to add in panel line details and other things and it's a bit different than how the stock paint kit was I figure I might include the paint kit too I'm using. Since ironically, the panel lines are different on each of the models due to window and door placements being different on say, the 580F and the standard 580. Small things like that. But it makes it a bit more customizable in that sense, so if you're super into the detail in that aspect, the paint kit will help. The old one it was just the bare chrome texture under all of it. Couldn't get the actual panel lines. The original paint kit still works, but I figure if people wanted to use it, they could. Either will work. Since I didn't change the maps really from the stock version much at all, any of the legacy paints that were made for it will still work with this. Just with some minor tweaking perhaps and adding in the specific files I've included for these. That even goes for the wings that now have a separate map for each wing. Which allowed me to do things like the Navy markings on the wings and them not be annoyingly mirrored. If say, you moved a legacy paint over to this model, you'd take the same stock wing texture, leave that in the same file, and then copy it and just add an L and R inside the title and bam! Now you have a wing file for each wing now. Main wing texture covers the animated bits like the flaps, ailerons and elevators. The other new ones are just the wings. So stuff like that. Once I've finished all the paints for everything I'll know more about how I'll package it up for download. Still thinking it might be too large to release as a mega pack. But we'll see. Might be 3 different ones for the 3 base models. Which has expanded from the base 3, to 8 model variations in total now.

Well I was doing a ton of research looking at other versions of the 580F to prepare some reference photos for the Hamilton Standard propeller version of it and have found, no existing photos of any cargo versions using that propeller option. So it could be the Fs don't have any in existence with that installed. However, I found a scale reference of the models and well, the 5800 needs a lot of work. I couldn't figure out why something about it didn't look right in the photos I looked at. Well, this pretty much sums up why that is. Not only is the aft section lengthened, but so is the front! So I will have to do a ton of work to fix that. You can really see this in this picture I found on the internet in regards to how much longer a 5800 is compared to a 580. It's more than I thought for some reason. But it's 81 feet long for a 580 and 95 feet long on a 5800! So this will likely mean I will have to completely redo the texture map for the 5800 due to this or work some sort of wizardry in the modeling process. My initial thought, is creating a panel plug from the original and lengthening it that way and taking that plug and adding it to the stock texture map. I'll see how that goes, but yeah. So that puts a damper a bit on moving that much further with the 5800. The nose gear, cockpit, and forward doors on both sides need to be moved and all that jazz. Still possible I'm sure, just will take time to correctly make that version of it and get it right.
