Convair CV-580

Can you complete the 580's in the meantime as you work on the 5800's? Isn't that always the case. Just when you think.....

Yeah, I'm seeing what all is going to be done with the base 580s anyway. They were getting close before I started working on the repaint aspect of it. I'd like to get them all done and release them as a single pack, or individually, depending on how big the pack ends up being. Since I've had to realign the project in what versions I'm doing. There wont be a 580F with the Hamliton Standard prop. Since I can't find any reference for a cargo variant having that propeller, so I'll forgo it. But instead will replace that with the CL-66 variant I found. The Canadian military variant of the VC-131H, but has the HS props instead of the AP ones. So just some swapping going on.

In the photos that I had downloaded to do the IFL repaint and then found it in that mega pack they have polished metal prop blades. probably PBR would work very well. They are in the wings I found in Material Editor "textures" by highlighting in Model Converter X.N141FL Props.jpg

I want to do this with the AP propeller variants as some of them do have a nice shiny chrome look to them. The HS props all seem to be more flat in coloration.

It was a heck of a day, but I think I knocked it out and it came out pretty good. I was rather surprised. The way the project has been pieced up I went through and basically started with a base and moved stuff around until it all fit together like a puzzle. The exterior changes for the 5800 went well overall. There are still some bits I need to fix, but I did a ton of work on it today. New texture maps as well for the majority of the fuselage. All animations seem to work as well too after the whole process. Now it looks much more proportioned. Now I just have to move all the stuff around for the interior. Which I had already planned on doing for these anyway, so just the little extra bits I have to move now shouldn't really add that much time overall. I'm pretty happy with it.

Wow! "Huggin' an' chalkin" Looks great! Continuing to look forward to them to fly. I found that in GSX I not only can specify the type of cargo container but also pallet loads. They are MDL's but are too large for the cargo hatches on the Convair 580F's so I am going to upload them in MDCx and reduce their size to fit the door. I am not sure if the 5800's have a larger cargo door. Then I will share how to do it for you to do yourself if you use GSX2 because they are property of Umberto's in a thread of it's own explaining how to do that. Above I say what container to specify for the 580F but don't want to hijack this fantastic thread of Schorch00's.

Very impressed with the way this project is moving.

Always enjoyed flying the Convair family in my Cal Classic FSX install - Looking forward to flying the modern descendents in P3D.

Keep up the good work.

I will look to double check. The 5800, might very well have a larger door. But based on the video and stuff I've seen on them, it seems like even the stock ones use the typical cargo box like what's used in commercial aviation tube liners. I watched a video of them trying to load them on a 580F in New Zealand it looked like it was a tight fight even then.

Edit I just looked it up. And the 580F and 5800s have basically the same width door. 580F has a 10 foot wide door as does the 5800. The difference according to what I saw was 2 inches of difference. 580 (118 inches) vs 5800 (120 inches).

I moved the 2 paints over I had of the 5800. Still needs some fine tuning. Still not 100% sure on how I'll keep this texture setup though. Although, it does work. Kelowna Flightcraft and IFL Groups paints look good on it. May still update a few things there. But I got all the bits I had to individually part and piece out to get this to work back on the airplane.

Some really nice detail in the film clip, including the windscreen splitter plate that is common to all th versions.

I found it last night and was sleepy but I just watched it again and I think that it shows that the textures should have a nice Alpha channel or PBR or both to get some shine to the paint as it shows clearly in the video unlike so many repaints of airliners that miss this and have that subdued look like a military jet.

PBR does add gloss to the overall look of the airplane. And certain colors do appear more flat than others, but still gives off that hint of gloss. It's far less pronounced on say, the Kelowna paint since it's white. Which I may tone down a bit with the PBR gloss on it since it looks like their airplanes are more a flat white than say, IFL's where there's a definite glossy sheen. I tried to get that on them. You can see here zoomed in, it has it.

I discovered a bug while checking some stuff out on the 5800 last night and it's across the board on them with the landing lights blinking like strobe lights. Even though there are no strobe lights either in the aircraft.cfg or the attached effect bits of the model. So I have no idea why they are there. But I may have to end up redoing all the external lights that are attached to the model to get rid of that annoying bug. It's apparently there from the original model for whatever reason. Just something else to fix. The 5800 I've also figured will have 4 paints with it. Kelowna, IFL, a blank white version, and I just finished Air Freight New Zealand this afternoon. I think that's all I'll do for them. Since I think currently, those are the main operators of what few 5800s there are. I'll just figure what other paints to do for the other models still. Other than me identifying the landing light bug. The model changes are slowly coming to an end I think.

Gremlins...with the 580's I believe that the rotating up landing lights are connected to the landing gear. It IS weird.

Just the nose gear taxi light is, I have it redone so it does that and the light turns off when the gear is retracted even if it's turned on while retracted. Not sure what it is that's caused the wing landing lights to do this strange strobe light display despite no strobe light being attached to it, but even replacing the lights doesn't seem to solve that. More investigating to ensue I suppose.

I don't want to insult you...did you check the 580 wing landing lights in the object heirarchy, sure you did. That is what I would do and compare them line by line to the 5800. Maybe something happened in the mod's. I know I get comments like this when I ask something in FSDevelopers from someone trying to be helpful and my silent comment is "uh yah duh!" to myself as I write a nice thank you comment for them taking the time to try and help, so I am taking the time to try and help. And go to sleep with my wife scowling at me for staying up this late. LOL! Good night.

Yeah I did that. The issue is across the board on all models. Not just the 5800. The stock variant also has the same issue. After looking at this further. It goes away based on the distance and angle away from the effects I placed for the landing lights. No idea why that is, but it's now seeming more like a P3D-ism perhaps or an effect bug of some type rather than an issue with the airplane itself. I noticed it switching between wing views looking back at the engines. Found out that when I zoomed in/out or moved the camera at a certain angle, the effect I put there mysteriously appears and the strobe effect goes away. So it's rather strange.
