F7F Tigercat SOH Project

F7F Tigercat SOH Project tanker panels

Hallo friends,
as a little contribuation I work on two different panels.
I wonder on which one to continue.
Also there is another question. SiS-Q's N6178C tanker E43flies today as Bad Kitty. The cockpit of Bad Kitty is somewhat different as the
other Tigercats. So I wonder if when she was flying as tanker the cockpit was assame as in Bad Kitty or more than the original Tigercat?
Because if the cockpit had a layout as Bad Kitty this will demand a third version for the tanker panels.
Here is the first one:

Here is the second version,
now the question, which one will be the more interesting to continue on and to finish for a release?

Papi, I agree; both of them look great to me. I guess if I had to choose, I would go with the first one since it has a similar appearance to the VC.

Thank you :applause:

Hi Papi,

Great work! I still haven't figured out which of your panels I like best, but I have one suggestion for the ones I've looked at so far.

Your panels all seem to have the insides of the canopy frames colored blue. The specifications in effect when the Tigercat was built and in service called for everything above the cockpit sill to be flat black. That would include the insides of all the canopy frames and the part of the bulkhead behind the pilot. Everything below the canopy rails was zinc chromate green except that the instrument panel and console surfaces were black.

(That refers to the inside, of course. The outside of the canopy frames were dark sea blue, the same as the rest of the plane.)

I thought I would try to edit your panel background bitmap to make the insides of the canopy frames black once I decide which panel I want to use. But first I have to check out the different panels to see which one I like best.

P.S.: I suppose you saw my earlier post that said that the green instrument markings used on the Corsair night fighter apparently were not used on the Tigercat, and the photo I posted of the photo of an F7F-3N panel. If you didn't see it, scroll up a ways.

Hallo Friends,

For the F-1 hmm, do you think Mick that I should do a correction?
Flat black should be possible to do. So as green is NOT used I should change it to
red?
in the F-3 it will be done.
For the Tanker the lightning will be turned to red but I would believe that the inner frame would be
natural metal. What do you say about?

Papi

Hi Papi,

When you write of black, do you mean the insides of the canopy frames? They should be black.

The photo shows that the instrument markings look white in the daytime, and they should definitely look red at night. Can you make them look white when the lights are off and red when the lights are on? That's what they would look like in the real F7F.

VC Colors

I've been fiddling with the cockpit colors of the F7F-1 and I've run into a roadblock.

I haven't tried to do anything with Papi's 2D panels, and I think I won't have to, since it seems that he will do what I would have done.

I
n the original 2D panel I changed the insides of the canopy frames, instrument panel and center console to black (well, "off-black:" extremely dark gray, almost black.) They look right when compared to photos pf the real Tigercat's cockpit.

In the VC I changed the panel and the center console to "off-black," but I can't figure out how to change the insides of the canopy frames from light gray to black (or "off-black") in the VC. I would really like to make that correction, since I'd like the 2D and VC cockpits to match, and I'd especially like to have them match in the correct colors. The center bow in the VC windscreen is already off-black, or dark enough gray to look good, but the big main outer arch is light gray and that's what I can't figure out how to change.

I'd appreciate any hints, tips or suggestions!

and here the same at night,

hmmm I'm not very glad with them.
at daylight I have the impression to loose too much of the frame- too dark,
and at night the red light seems a bit too luminous.
To find out the best corrections would take some time I think

Hi Papi,

It looks good to begin with, but I agree with your thinking that there's room for improvement. As you wrote, the canopy frames could be lighter, and the red light at night could be less luminous. We seem to be thinking very much alike!

I came up with this for the original 2D panel. It looks black, but not totally jet black. You can still see the detail, the line where the sliding part of the canopy meets the windshield, and the second image is my modification of the VC panel, where I still don't know how to color the insides of the canopy frames:

Mick, thank you for your interest and involvement.

Here is the answer to your question. Feel free to ask if you need info.

EDIT: That's a bit hard to read: fusefront_t.bmp is where you will find the inner part of the windshield frame.

I hear that! Keep going; I'd like to see as many variations as you're willing to create. In fact, were there instances of Fire Bosses or Fire Control guys flying un-modified -3's? Maybe a fictional version of one would look pretty cool...

I think they really look fabulous in the Sim!

Thanks Milton!

Many thanks! In general, thank you for the plane, and specifically, thanks for the tip on the canopy frames.

I should find time later today to darken up the frames and I'll post a screenie of the result.

OK, here's my vintage VC with the instrument panel, center console and the insides of the canopy frames painted black, as per the Navy's standards in the days when the F7F was operational.

I was pleased to see that the VC canopy frames only need changing on the F7F-1. They're already black on the -3 and dark sea blue, dark enough to give very nearly the proper visual impression, on the -3N, though those who are most particular may still want to make the changes on the -3N.

I think I'll put together a "vintage panel back-date kit" and upload it to the library for those who'd like to back-date their panels.
