F7F Tigercat SOH Project

At the risk of being murdered in my sleep by angry hordes of users, go enjoy the weekend - you deserve a small break!

Break? I sleep 6-7 hours every night! Being creative is inspirational and motivational. It only becomes work when you get into the many VC parts ... LOL. And, we have an excellent volunteer who loves to do VC's so I am looking forward to passing the baton. ;-)

As soon as we determine who is doing the mapping and panel/gauges, we will be on a roll.

Maybe we could ask our esteemed Bomber 12th buddy to texture this work of art ? :) ;)

Bomber_12th has expressed an interest ... all he needs is time. :jump:

My intent is to deliver 4 versions of the F7F series: F7F-1, F7F-3 Single seat, F7F-3 two-seat, and F7F-3N.

Here are the -1 and -3 single seat versions, exterior models ready for mapping and interior model development.

Beautiful work! Setting the bar high, yes indeedy.
Wow, the pilot figure really sets up the scale of the plane.

I drool that much more every time I catch up with this post!

Paint Kit please Bomber12. :salute:

I think I have about every Classic Wings Craig had ever done. :ernae:

Well, along with the F7F-1, I have gotten the basic F7F-3 single seater and F7F-3 two-seater exterior mods done. Next up is the drooped snout F7F-3N. :jump:

Wow, Milton. Great looking models. Thanks for your efforts, and thanks for sharing your progress in pics. :ernae:

I may have spotted a fly in the virtual ointment. The engine's reduction gear housing looks like a B-series R-2800. I think production F7F's used C-series engines.

Oh, looking at details huh? lol

According to Corky Meyer's book, his first flight of the xf7f-1, the engines were R-2800-10B, the standard engine for the production Hellcat. The second prototype used the -22C.

However, the first production F9F-1's shipped with the R-2800-22W engines giving them 600 more HP and provided 445MPH at FL200.

EDIT: Also, all of the -2 series were issued with hte -22W engines.

The F7F-3 series all shipped with the R-2800-34W engines adding 100 HP per engine.

I hope this helps. :wiggle:

EDIT: And, thanks for reminding me to be sensitive to the engine types in the models. I have been too drowned in other details to pay much attention to it. And, I have no good engine pics of the -1 for good identification. I used the this -3P pic set the current model.

Milton:

I will send you a photo of the 22W engine. The main difference in the nose case is that it is a cylinder up to the final nose where a sharply tapered (think truncated cone) section is bolted on with a flange. The B engines had a one piece cast unit, somewhat more rounded at the nose.

Hey, not as bad as a certain Corsair that has a bank of seven rather than nine cyls.

Cheers: Tom

I really do appreciate all the eyes as the project evolves. This simply makes the end product better. Once we get through the exterior, with 3 variants based on that, and once the mapping gets done, errors and oversights are so much more involved to get corrected if it involves major body skins. So, if you have questions or observations to make known, now is the time. We appreciate your interest.

Okay, focus for tonight and tomorrow is to get the -3N bulbrous nose added. :)

EDIT: Here is a start ... crying for some black paint

I already sent Milton a photo of the 22W engine from my R2800 book. I ordered the Pilots Operating manual and performance charts to help tune the final results.

Cheers: T

Biggest visual differences between the B and C series R-2800's were the reduction gear housings.

B engines had a one piece cast housing, C engines had a two piece housing.

Here are a couple of C series R-2800's with pretty good detail of the gear housings.
