NAS Alameda, CA KNGZ for FSX

Honored

A friend and I were in high school when his brother, who was a Navy enlisted aircrew member on A-3s, came back home on leave. This would have been in 1969-70, maybe 70-71. He went back from leave and a short time later I found out he had been killed in the crash of an A-3 at Alameda. Info I got decades later indicated the aircraft had rotated and was on climbout when it suffered a dual engine failure and basically fell out of the sky. I would like to include this scenery in my FSX sim for his sake.

That would be an honor to be part of your legacy and memory to him.

We're REALLY tryin'. Wanted this to be perfect with no blinks or glitches and simulloyd is working very hard on tweaking it for release. As soon as he shoots me the fixes I will put them in place and we will be releasing the Final version of KNGZ NAS Alameda 1970-1980 for everyone who has been so patiently waiting for it. Thanks to everyone for all your input and your encouragement to us the past (I can't believe) 6 months. We're excited to share this with all of you.

Its Finally Ready

After much anticipation and many problems all fixed, here is the dropbox link to download the complete final version of NAS Alameda 1965-1990. I want to especially thank simulloyd for pitching in in a big way and helping to finish this so that you guys could have it. Enjoy. We will not be making any changes or additions to this. Quite frankly we're both burned out. It has been tested and works perfectly on his computer and mine with all the textures and MDLs where they belong. I hope that you all enjoy it. You have waited patiently for a long time (six months) and we appreciated all the encouragement and comments that allowed us to do all the fixes when and where they needed to be. There are tons of custom buildings where once were FSX default to make it as good as we could. Its a long download. Then without further ado:

Reservists delivered as promised. What a great scenery. I loved the quarterdeck paint. I had forgotten all about them. Now, back to exploring.

Can this be adapted to work in P3D ?

I must admit , I have not read through all of the hundreds of threads to finds this answer but thought maybe I could catch a response to this question .

Great looking scenery ,

Rich

I believe that simulloyd has opened up one of the earlier downloads in P3D and it worked but I don't know which version or if it was this one which he tested before giving the ok. Maybe he'll answer this question for you. Otherwise, ADEX says that if I modified the layer of the GPs which I had to do in some places you would not get shadows in P3D. I don't have any of the versions of P3D so I couldn't test it. My computer and video card don't have enough "guts" to run P3D properly to gain all its advantages I have read.

Richard,

Thank you for such a detailed NAS Alameda. :encouragement:

It does eat my frame rates a bit. I saw three carriers and I guess it's the CV59 (FID) that doesn't have the 59 number painted on the island, it is blank. At least for me it is.

Glad I read the bottom of one of the many readme you got there that explains the status of the three carriers i.e., the FID is a static and anchored and I guess the other two have
sailing schedules. I put the CV63/64 bgl's in the KNGZ scenery folder but I guess you have the FID (CV59) baked into your KNGZ BGL scenery right?

Am hoping someone can help me solve this problem. I tried to follow all instructions for installation, but I obviously screwed something up. When I select Alameda, the only option I am given is the Active Runway, period. No parking.

Please give me a idea where to look for problem??? Thanks, NC

Correct On All Counts

First, you are most welcome, enjoy. It is FPS intensive but I did not see any visual differences and there WAS an improvement on Frame Rates by following uichi's suggestions for HIS scenery on the chart. I also have watched CVA 64 and CVA 64 come in and out for months so I did not activate them in MY FSX to try and improve there too. I have just the CVA-59 sound and the Base Sound installed for right now.

The entire folder KNGZ NAS Alameda is to be copied and pasted into FSX\Addon Scenery (the main Addon Scenery folder) by using Windows Explorer. Close Windows Explorer. Then start FSX. Go to Settings. Scenery Library. Add Area. FSX will open up. Open up the Addon Scenery Folder. Click on KNGZ NAS Alameda. It will open up. Click OK. If you are using Windows 7, ( I guess 8 and 10 too) left mouse click in the open white area. You will be returned to the Scenery Area. Close it. Wait for it to update the Scenery.cfg. Go to Free Flight. Change the Airport. Type in KNGZ in the center airport box and you should have all the parking and runways. Let me know how you make out. I did this step by step not to talk down to you but to help.

Not talking me down at all, but I had done all the above. Obviously a conflict somewhere. I will find it eventually. But thank you for your tip! Pete

Conflict

Hey Pete,

Open up FSX in Windows Explorer. Check the addon scenery\scenery folder for any KNGZ conflicting bgl files and delete them from there. Also be sure that you do NOT have any previous versions of the airport anywhere in your FSX installation. This is a clean install, not an update any longer. See if that might be giving you trouble. (If you haven't done this already).

I found the problem. When I go to select a airport, if I type in Alameda, then Alameda NAS appears, with a Airport ID of NGZ. Only active runway is available to choose. But, if I type in NAS Alameda, then the correct one, with Airport ID of KNGZ shows up...... I choose that one, and all is well. So is the NGZ the default airport? NC

NGZ is the closed airport and yes that is what FSX defaults to. To eliminate that problem, open up Windows Explorer; create a new folder in FSX and name it old bgl. Then, open up FSX\scenery\0102\scenery. Scroll down a bit to APX15180.bgl. This is the default closed Alameda airport. Move that bgl to the Old bgl folder. If it moves into the new folder and stays there. When you have it in the Old Bgl folder, delete the one in 0102. Now you cannot open up the closed air station because its not there. Other guys rename it to APX15180.bak and leave it there but this is the way I do it and it works. I'm glad you figured it out quickly and this will fix it for good.

Thanks shipmate! And your scenery is top notch! Pete

Just so I understand. you left the 59 numbers off of the Forrestal (for now) and will fix that later? Would it of done any good for me to use one of the old cv59 bgls instead?

Wow you guys put in a LOT of work! I just loaded it into Prepar3d Version 3 and there does apear to be a few texture issues on some of the Seaplane hangars. Closing it down, and opening FSX now. As I am an ORBX User, I will of course have to modify this airport just a little bit as I have previously been very open about. I will give you guys a couple screenshots when I have completed my work. Would you guys be opposed to me posting a link to an Orbx compatible version of YOUR Work here in the Thread? Basically, I will just be realigning a couple of things to match the photoreal, and deleting backround polygons that are un-necesary with a photoreal backdrop. The Orbx version should also be compatible with BlueSky Scenery right out of the Box.
