REX is released!

Well, I'm kinda dissapointed that the water still looks HUGE, as in it's WAY out of scale. This actually keeps me away from water in FSX.

Looks outstanding...:ernae:

But this 'ol rig can't run those cloud resolutions so I'll be passing on this....:cost1:

Panther, you'd be surprised. The only texture in REX that will really cut down the fps is the tropical shallow water. I am running the 2048 cloud texture with DX10 unchecked. I don't like using DX10 in FSX. Very few of my favorite ported over FS9 aircraft will not work in DX10 mode and the runway markings flicker. I also get lower fps in DX10, thus I do not use it.

The one item I do plan to update on my new rig is the GPU. I am going to get a good quad-core Intel or AMD suitable for my MB and system since I have heard that FSX is heavy on the GPU.

To tell you the truth, unless I am capturing in FRAPS, I have no complaints now. I have my setting rather high as you can see by the screens and I get a constant 20 fps with the sim set at that frame rate. In FS9, I am set at 30 fps and it does that without a flick or a flutter, so I am more than pleased there.

But slowly FSX is really winning me over, It could use better ground textures throughout the world. UTX-USA helped that part of the world a lot, but like you I am tempted to go back to default textures in lieu of GTX-USA, I really can't tell that much of a difference.

But REX is the real deal. I still use REP on FS9 for water, spotlight, WX Environment, Enhanced lights, enhanced sun (when not using Active Sky), Feng's Treegen, 3D Bitmap, environmental reflection, and skies (again when not using Active Sky).

Also amazing anout REX is the fact that I can use Active Sky 6.5 to read the real weather through the latest FSUIP 4.0 for FSX and once I have loaded my preference for REX clouds, after about two minutes into the sim, Active Sky reports a METAR reading for the local airport and boom, REX supplies the clouds to match almost to a tee.

Okay, you muscular feline, you talked me into investing a lot of capital into FS9 products. YOU NEED THIS PROGRAM!!!!:icon_lol:

Hey Caz...
I don't even have Vista loaded.....:d & I've also got AMD power too...:kilroy:

Apologies but while it looks great, I've never been able to run 512k & higher clouds with any decent frame rates. So I'm going to just have to hold off on this one...

Took 15 hours totally to download. Last night at 7pm i was getting the 13 to 28k/sec download time with 20 hours remaing to download then at 8pm it went up to 160k and completed download in 2.5 hours. So now it is time to install:mixedsmi:.

:icon_lol::icon_lol::icon_lol:....

Sorry but the lack of a 256k cloud option has me turned off.....:cost1:

But as stated earlier, it does look quite impressive :)

Cazzie.....Nice Video, but amigo, you have some problems with your ground scenery...it looks like old FS9 to say the least....check that.

Dial up is slow:bs:

Aye! Yi! Yi! Gera. :banghead:

That is good old default FSX ground scenery I am afraid. And in the USA where I have GEX-USA, it really does not help very much. UTX-USA helps better, But overall, FSX needs a Ground Environment face lift. I may sooner or later opt for the OZx crew's scenery for Australia and use it world-wide. They look much better that the default, which though more resolute than FS9 and just too cartoon-like and too bright and repetitive. That has to be the next challenge, an overall ground environment program. I'd sure pay a dollar or two for that! :ernae:

I am also afraid that having the video compress into a Flash Player format and size does not help matters. If you double-click the embedded video and go to the video at YouTube, you will get a slightly larger video window and an option for High Quality, which is better.

I'm running the 4096x4096 clouds and there is a frame rate hit, but it is still very flyable. The sky and water textures are really incredible. I haven't settled on a cloud theme yet. Trying to find one that will make thunderheads look more realistic.

Hey Scratch be sure whatever resolution you use in the hidef format that you use the DXT5 option in the OPTIONS MANAGER. This will ensure you have a smooth experience :)

Cheers
Tim

well I bought it and downloaded it and it will not run.

can't get it to make a backup file in the configuration manager.

I have emailed them AND posted on their forum but after all this hassle I am ready to frag it all. They have so far not replied to me over there but to be fair I have only posted about 2 hours ago.

I have got the pathways set just fine but no soap on step 2 - the generating of a backup file.

I have tried everything short of a complete reinstall - I am leary of that one as I have had FSX running smoothly for a long time now and this is just the kind of fustercluck to cause FSX to meltdown and require its own reinstallation and I do not want to go there just yet.

If anyone here has an answer I would be gratefull for some help.

edit: I have a folder in the REX 'Themes' folder called 'backup_20081203' that seems to contain all the FSX folders I would expect to see in such a folder...

ok - I got a reply at their forum that seems to be a fix - only a few users have reported this issue - the fix can be found at their site

however - there is another error

it is during the loading of the REX weather engine

I get this : error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component'

and then the weather engine loads...and loads...and loads...and loads...:kilroy: and loads...and loads...

I like what I have seen in the cloud area but I am more into how the water looks being since I live close to the ocean. Looking at a few of there water shots I am a tad bit disappointed in what they show on there video and what others have posted. I would have also liked to have seen better land texture for the 60.00...maybe in time they will have a update but for now I think I will pass...Mike

My Thoughts so far

Having gone through the the downloading problems and then spent the time setting up the product, I find the following thoughts come to mind.

When you have made your choice of Sky, Water, Weather etc, it seems to take an age to load these into FSX, i.e 6mins.
Fex SHD textures only take a minute to load and some of them I feel look better.
Once loaded you start FSX, start your'e engine, get halfway down the runway then the screen freezes while Rex loads the weather.

I had FEX running before this and I think it had a better choice of Clouds, the water animation look better and with a greater choice of textures, not so large looking as Rex, others have reported this also.
The only thing I like about the water textures is the Coral views, they do look great, but I don't fly in the Tropic's very often so I won't get to use them much.

As for the runnway textures, I think the freeware ones I was using looked better. I can not understand why Lights are included, A2A lights work O.K.

To me, the whole thing just seems over complicated, an extra 4gb is a large package, some may not have the room required for it.

It maybe just me or my system, I,ll keep trying for now but may go back to FEX and hope they get there weather engine up and running.

This is only my opinion, as far as the product goes they have done a fanastic job, but just a bit too complicated for me.

p.s. Just checked REX the folder size in My Computer it's showing 6.55GB

I agree 100 percent with Bruce - I will uninstall REX and chalk it up to the grass not always being greener.
