Tailwind Released!

Lionheart

SOH-CM-2014
Hey all,

Well, its time for my newest child to go out into the world. Always a nervous moment for me.

This is the Wittman Tailwind.

Her designer, Steve Wittman created her back in the 1950's as an inexpensive, very fast plane to make in your garage. Consisting of very basic materials, a very small airframe, one could (can) afford to build one for a very economilcal price.

This model comes with two aircraft. The older W-8 series, and the newer, faster W-10 series. The W-8 has a different panel (basic), different rudder (there were actually 3, this is the raked back version), and a basic landing gear option (the W-8 comes with and without wheel skirts, while the W-10 has skirts on all variants). The W-10 will max out at 200 MPH (not Knots), and cruise at 180 MPH. The W-8 is slower, maxing out at 180 MPH, and cruising between 140 to 160 MPH.

Here is a list of features;

* Custom high detail instrumentation
* New Avionics featuring an MX12 NAV-COM, transponder, and autopilot in the W-10
* Full night lighting with soft glow gauge instrumentation for night flights 'without' the dome light needing to be on
* Eight different paint schemes with several versions of interiors
* One aircraft called 'Retro' features an early 1960's paint scheme and wood panel interior from that era the Tailwind
came from
* Fully animated control surfaces and various controls within the Tailwind Collection
* Front diagonal cross brace bars in front of pilot are hideable with a switch for ease of flying in VC mode
* Features high detail 2D panels by legendary Bill Leaming
* Optional Wide Screen Panels can be linked to Registry blocks in the aircraft config file for wide screen users
* Ice box in rear cargo shelf opens and features animated bottled water and sandwich
* Custom sounds throughout the aircraft
* Hide-able top sun cover for the W-8, which features a fully transparent roof
* Hide-able front instrument panel cover made of an old airchart map
* Features a functioning virtual replica of the Apple iPhone 3Gs with;
1. Sleep Mode
2. Lockout Mode
3. Apps window
4. 8 Song Tracks and can use your own music converted to WAV format
5. Features on photo page
6. Has one ringtone
7. Has functioning Compass App with GPS coordinates readout and heading in digital format also
* Pilot auto-hides when engine stops running
* Basic cargo displays outside of plane when engine stops running
* Comes in full, complete FSX format with DDS files, all in high performance DXT5 DDS format
* Comes also with FS2004 version with most files in high performance DXT3 format, 2 in 888-8 32Bit High rez.
* Custom sound package
* Custom flight model (aircraft config files) that feature a unique feel for the aircraft
* Tailwind Operations Manual in PDF format
* Checklist in popup view, does not use Kneeboard program

So... What you get; 2 new, freshly built Experimental 2 place aircraft, a virtual iPhone that can be programmed for your own music (see above and manual for more info), and..... (this is the cool part) its only $16.95. This is an introductory price that expires on Sunday night next weekend. At that time, it goes to $19.95.

I hear of 2 people having issues installing them on vista 64. So if you have vista 64, you might hold off a couple of days until its sorted.

Have fun and happy flying.

Got my copy. :wiggle: Installed without a hitch - sat at the end of the runway - gave her the gun - ZOOOOOOM! The phrase "homesick angel" definitely came to mind as this little gal soared into the heavens. :d She's a beauty, Bill. Thank you very much for creating her!! :applause:

Brian

I bought her right away but....This has got to be the worst FPS plane I own...its KILLING my frame rates. one sec I'm at 34 or 40 FPS then I'm at 7fps Whats going on? Only thing I can think of is the GPS...does it have a sleep mode? I am going to // it out of the cinfig to see if thats the issue here.

Very nice! Love the sounds - makes a great touch!
I dunno about "home-sick angel" - seems rather anemic at 4600 ft., where I live... but it is very torquy! Lots of power for maneuvering!
Great plane!

Hey Brian,

Roger that, lol.. Remember though that your weight is with only one person, no cargo. Double your pilots and add 60 pounds to the cargo and it will be a bit slower on that climb and accelleration.

This is my record in making 'numbers' of airfiles for a single plane. This last one finally worked the way I wanted it. Took a long time. I think I bugged poor Milton so many times on data questions, he is probably tired of hearing from me, lol..

Hey SB,

Cant be the GPS. Its the same GPS with a different cover (artwork) on it. No new technology.

No glass systems, no modules, no high technology gadjetry..

Just took my new tailwind for a spin........golly, goodness, gee whiz........Thanks Lionheart, the Tailwind is purt near perfect. I especially like the visibilti from the VC. Hope you turn out some more small GA aircraft with the same realism, detail and fun factor.

Barry

Well I removed the panel folder and she is an awesome bird.....just no panel or gauge in VC. I wonder if its the Ipod? if the GPS is not new......

Awesome Bill, that is my kind of airplane.

Two things: one resolved, one not.

Lost my wallet yesterday; had to take my youngest to Greensboro to a urology specialist today. Got a call on my cell from my wife, said drop by Wally World on my way back, they found it: intact! :ernae:

Second, I have Vista 64-bit goshdangit! When you have the fix for sure, I'm getting this one.

Ball game tonight at 7:00, fresh Summer :icon29:. Brother's meeting me there. Having a 6 game home stand, won last night 5 - 2. A good power club, rookie league for the Braves. Thursday night is "Thirsty Thursday", :icon29: half off. I get tickets from the Goodyear Credit Union for a buck seventy-five per game. That's a steal to watch some of the best, hungry baseball talent in America, both ours and theirs.

Is there anyway that the Iphone can be disabled so that I can reinstall the panel file?

This is a cool plane but flying without gauges is kind rough.

Hey Caz,

I think I have found the issue. Rather, Harleyman did.

It appears that the Tailwind may require SP2 to run. Now, I do not have SP2 on my sim, but... I am running WinXP 32Bit on my iMac. So.... This could be the culprit.

Mason was one of the only ones that had this issue (some textures not showing up). Then, today, two gentlemen in Germany have the same issue. Mason downloaded the SP2 pack and the plane was perfect.

Another mystery...

Hey SB,

Yes there is.

Go to your panel folder of each Tailwind, open the panel config file with Notepad, go to the window that has the 'cell phone' gauge in it, and place two slashes in front of the gauge, save, and test.

Sample;

//--------------------------------------------------------
[Window04]
Background_color=0,0,0
size_mm=396,734
window_size_ratio=1.000
position=8
visible=0
ident=77
window_size= 0.206, 0.584
window_pos= 0.800, 0.000

gauge00=LHC_TW!CellPhone, 1,1,396,734

Change line above to look like this;
//gauge00=LHC_TW!CellPhone, 1,1,396,734

Let me know how it does.

:ernae:
Well, it's the only way I was going to get a 3GS iPhone this week...
Next: A Tailwind that runs on an iPhone!

The IPhone gauge isn't your problem. That gauge won't even load unless you open the subpanel...

For those with wide-screen monitors...

Edit the aircraft.cfg files and add "ws" (without quotes) to every panel= entry:

panel=ws

Ok...well...I'm not sure what it is but I will have to do a process of elimination. I know its the panel creating my issues. For now I fly without gauges.

I have found that many planes with GPS that if I disable the GPS it gets rid of stutter and FPS issues. This did not work this time. I just wish there were a way to sleep mode the GPS so its not working. Doesn't the Kodiak have a sleep mode for the GPS?

Like the IPhone, the GPS will NEVER be loaded unless you open the subpanel. So, it isn't that either! :isadizzy:
