The Ongoing Mystery Aircraft Thread Part Deux.

Perfectly legit, Kevin. I am beginning to regret having brought choppers into the thread, however..............:banghead:

Kevin, it's totally OK. The link you posted is the source I was referring to earlier.
Your mystery DID fly, several times, with various configurations, as a landing gear testbed (retracting or not...) but it may not have been the CT-001.

While the document is not crystal clear, I understood that the CT-001 had to do with the drawing just above "02 - Avion laboratoire CT-001". Below it is said that the CT-001 was planned as a twin-engined which never went past the mockup stage.
T'was a nice mystery - especially since I could name it :d :ernae:

Lefty, if you think copters are ugly ducklings that have nothing to do here, just speak and I'll post a "real" mystery...

Oooowww that's a cunning one :d

Yann, would the photo on the wall of the tent be the famous name ? Unfortunately, can't make out who it is ! Looks a bit like Donald Trump but he would never use anything as modest as this.

FORUM RULES
Of course, there are none, but the old lags who frequent the forum have developed a few conventions in order to keep the thing interesting.

Light Aircraft - all we try to do is avoid an endless stream of Piper/Cessna clones, and there are lots of those. Trainers are fine, and anything interesting, e.g. pushers, twin-booms, etc. Homebuilds are too many to get into, so are out.

Gliders - again, most modern sailplanes look depressingly similar, and it's a field we never seem to stray into. Don't see anything wrong with military gliders or, again, unusual ones.

Choppers - they turn up regularly - James, aka Hurricane, is our resident whirly expert but is somewhat preoccupied with studies at the moment. Again, if they are interesting, why not !

Very Ancient Stuff - again, the majority of posters tend to avoid the very early stringbags - the one good site with early aviation data has sadly gone.

Projects - designs that never got off the drawing board, or model stage, are a no-no. I threw in a full-size mockup once and it went down like a lead balloon. If it almost made it off the deck, then fine !

Photoshopping - legit where registrations or other markings would give the game away. Altering them to confuse is strictly frowned upon ! As far as I know, nobody has yet posted a completely mythical photoshopped design, but the temptation is always there.................(look out for the Leftyphibian)

If anyone has any other ideas or comments, this is a democratic forum, so feel free !

You didn't mention Ralf's gasbags, thereby leaving him an opening. :costumes:

All in all, pretty reasonable. Most of what's put up I don't have a bloody clue on. I think the last one I got was the DC-1 and that was months ago. Still I enjoy looking in and seeing what the horror of the hour is. It's all educational.

And I've still got that flying boat in readiness should lightning strike twice. :icon_twi:

What is really disconcerting about the mystery chopper, is one of the guys looking at the machine is my doppelganger. Even my missus aked if it was me:isadizzy::isadizzy: I even have a jacket like his.

Sadly no time to spend on it today - off to do the present distribution round then curling tonight. Nothing obvious yet - but wait till Moses arises !

Are there any good chopper books around ? Never seen one.

:icon_twi:

Ha, ha. I'd actually banned myself from posting them, on the grounds that it's the Historical WINGS Society. Nor do helicopters have wings, but still! But thanks to recent 1950s airliner activities, even Ralf is quite interested in choppers. I've got the Sabena ones sorted out, including a flyable S-55. And I've got an enormous, horrid French helicopter which might make an appearance in a thread I'm hoping to start on its 40th anniversary between Christmas & New Year...

The current mystery, however, has me stumped. All I can find in the library is the Guinness Book of Helicopter Facts & Feats, which seems to be mainly about military ones. Maybe James Hurricane will be back for the holidays & put us all out of our misery?

The more I think about it, the more it seems to be a stinker among stinkers. So here's a BIG clue: this copter is closely related to automobile.

Okay, 1st helo from me and last one.
It is a Citroën-Marchetti R2.
Yes, the same Citroën that made the 2CV (aka the Ugly Duckling), that's the 1st unusual thing about it.
No, that Marchetti has nothing to do with the italian seaplane maker.
It was powered by a rotary engine (à la Wankel), that's the 2nd unusual thing about it.
Maiden flight on Dec 24, 1975 !

This should last .01 second:

My first thought was : "Hey that looks like a Me-109 but with a radial engine!" and it is! It's the Messerschmitt Me-109 V-21.
The undercarriage, wings and tail are straight off a normal 109.

:)

As for the chopper: D'oh!
I did see the Tour Eiffel on the poster which means the face is probably that of André himself, who was of Dutch descent!
Didn't have time to dig deeper though..

The last mystery gave me a good reason to revisit some Me-109's in Fs; I have the boxed version (By Flight1) of the Flight Replicas 109's, which cover the F,G and K models, and the FR Avia S-99 & S-199. Interesting to see how the 109 design evolved during and after the war. The later models might have been better armed and faster but the earlier models are more fun to fly. The Jumo powered S-199 is a real beast on the ground and get you in a lot of trouble really fast!

Knew the Messerschmitt wouldn't last long. Well done Ferry - and a belated :icon29: to help you start the day ;)

Thanks &co! Kinda surprised my mystery made it through the night though; didn't think it was that difficult for all the experts in here.
