Chief,
Video name is Oriskany Dawn Launch.
Hope you enjoy it.
Cheers.

Deke

Deke,

The video is so great! The music reminds me of an old USN aviation flick, such as "The Bridges at Toko Ri", or that timeframe at any rate.

First class production. As a Senior Chief I used to work for would say, "Simply superb!"

Pete

Deke,

That video sure brought back some memories. Excellent video. I was on the USS Hancock (another 27C carrier) about that time frame and the only difference was the tail codes.

One thing (and some of you retired Navy Vietnam (Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club Members) remember was there was always a Chinese Junk that would "Monitor" our operations
from a few thousand yards (maybe closer) and just before we'd launch or recover aircraft, the Junk would turn into the wind in the same direction we would, only a few minutes before us.
It was an non official part of the task force. You really nailed it with the aircraft complement from the A-4's to the Whales to the S-2. Only thing missing was the (cough... cough) stack gas!! :icon_lol:

As I recall that "Chinese junk" was usually a Soviet AGI intelligence collector. They had our launch and recovery routine down pat and they provided info to the folks in Hanoi about launch times and strike packages. The North Vietnamese may not have known exactly where the strikes were headed but they certainly knew they were coming. By the time the aircraft were "feet dry" (over land) every SAM site and AAA crew with a phone/radio was locked and loaded. Sorry to digress from the O-Boat/27-Charlie topic. :salute:

Like the Vid, where did you get the spad with the Oriskany markings on it? Did the Oriskany get re-released with the correct CAG tail markings this time?

From here, sir..... http://flyawaysimulation.com/downloads/files/5222/fsx-us-navy-douglas-1-skyrider-va-152/

... And one more is this... http://flyawaysimulation.com/downloads/files/5220/fsx-us-navy-douglas-1-skyrider-va-95/

Both of them are the A-1J model , But I don't know why every time I landed the J model on the carriers, it'd bouncing around like hell off the flight deck. So I put these textures into the A-1H model and no problem like that of the A-1J model at all.

Thanks everyone for the compliments!

I have uploaded this morning my Whale repaints (whidbey Whales.zip), the Demon repaint (VF-161.zip), a Skyraider repaint (VA-165.zip) and a VAP-61 RA-3B repaint - many of which will go well with Gary's Oriskany - especially when his next release comes.

Ground crash issue

I have been extensively testing O trapping and while I can trap the Whale on the SDB Big E, the Nimitz and the recent freeware Midway, in each case with crash detection switched "on" I cannot land the Whale on the O - in this case with crash detection always "off" - without what seems like it is impacting the ground or water at a speed or force that would otherwise induce a crash.

Before the wheels touch the plane jumps almost vertically at very high speed. It is the same behavior e.g., as when your 5 year old grabs the controls on FS and tries deliberately to crash into the ground or water, with crash detection off, and plane bounces back up into the air. I also hear some creepy sounding screaming like people on a roller coaster - LOL - someone must have put that in an xml gauge somewhere. Anyway, no problem trapping the F-8, Virtavia A-4, Piglet's A-1, Demon etc. Just the Whale. I think - as it is so big - it is hitting a "crash box" or something like that.

Hmmm.
What is your approach speed? You can try different flap settings, but definitely ensure your speedbrakes are out,
At full flaps, the aircraft likes to float, so I rarely try at full. If someone were to modify the air file to ease that out a bit, it would be more realistic.

I will test it out and provide details tonight.
BTW, where is the "freeware MIDWAY"? I'd love to get it ASAP.
Thanks.
Deke

Deke,

Will try some approaches without full flaps but with light fuel (<10%) I hit stall speed at or below about 110 KIAS. I can easily "grease" her onto the other boats - and that is with crash detection "on" with much less room for error on speed/impact - so I don't think it is my flight path or profile or other things like the [tail hook] values being out, etc.

Re the Midway, think it came out of this thread. You may need to poke around to find it though: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?76093-CV-41-USS-Midway-FSX(A)

Regarding the whale, if memory served me correctly it was either here and/or at the now defunct unofficial Alphasim forums we trawled through the FDE to reduce the glider charatistics.

Maybe this will serve as a reminder to someone that hey might have made a backup of the mods made.

The Aircraft.cfg was split into different Mk types also.

Thanks expat.
I followed the thread, and it seemed to me that Midway (and Coral Sea) were CFS2 ships. Downloaded those, and installed into sim objects/boats and configured the ai carriers file to bring them to life - or so i thought. CTD occurred. Is there anything special that needs to be done to make them useable in FSX (A)?

Bringing the Whale home on Oriskany - not much room for error, and lots of bolters! I have found that fuel around 30% or less works for me, with an approach speed at half flaps around115 kts and speedbrakes out.

Here is my hook setting:
[TailHook]
tailhook_length = 4
tailhook_position = -15, 0, -1
cable_force_adjust = 1

I also found that the cfg file changes posted in another thread that was supposed to provide better flight characteristics by changing the airplane geometry provided way too much nose down. Here is my airplane geometry:

Deke,

Thanks - have added your air.cfg [airplane geometry] section (I have your exact tail hook settings already) and will try later.

Re the Midway, I have searched but can't find where I think someone posted a conversion from CFS that works in FSX. Will keep looking.
