Been keeping tabs on all your config discussions and uploaded videos whilst I work away on the next release in the background. Once I get this finished i've got soooooo many questions to ask all of you on how to do some of the things you've been doing with the model!

meantime i've finished an "interim" pack of flight deck crew. Red, Yellow and green shirts only at this stage as I want to test impact on frame rates.

These are modified textures from Malte Deja's German airforce ground crew. The models were uploaded to be used with other sceneries so i'm sure it'll be okay for me to use them, though I need to check he is happy with me using these models and textures (and will of course reference him as the source).

Working on new island, flight deck and experimenting with hull textures before i go into test with the next release.

Looking great Gary! Thanks for the update.
One thing i have noted, and not sure you can change it, but the HF antennas on both port and starboard side adjacent to cats 1 and 2 are always in the down (horizontal) postion for launch and recovery. Most of them are in the down position, but there are two on both sides forward that remain in the up position. Not a big deal, and I know it came from the sketchup that way. Just thought I'd point that out.

Well spotted Sir! That's an easy fix I'll sort that one out.

I am certain that none of this is easy! But it is appreciated. I also noted that there are also two near the stern just forward of the rounddown.
Looking forward to your update Gary!
Thanks much.

Curious, what is and why is it called the "rounddown."?

Expat,
The rounddown is the area where the aft portion of the flight deck angles downward about 15 degrees for about 8 feet before it angles down 90 degrees. Carrier designers felt that provided a safer margin than a sharp 90 degree end to the flight deck - and they were right! My first deployment in Nimitz in 84, a former helo pilot had transitioned to Tomcats with the "Jolly's" (VF-84 Jolly Rogers). Nimitz was fresh out of the yards with brand new non skid and paint on the flight deck (and rounddown). After a few screaming power calls from the LSO's followed by frantic wave off calls, his left mainmount tire left a nice black mark on the rounddown (8 feet right of centerline, by the way), which stayed there for months for all to see. He boltered, was sent back to the beach, never to appear again.
Without that rounddown, he would have had nothing but a stub of a mainmount...

The round down also smooths the airflow as it comes off the back of the ship, if it was just square there'd be a lot of vortex shedding creating disturbed airflow just as you crossed the stern. Which would be bad.
WW2 era RN ships also had a similar feature on the bow to give the rather fragile aircraft in use an easier time of it.

Coral Sea/Midway really needs a redo... our (Bruce Baker as well) effort for CFS2 really does not do FSX justice as we were working with a poly budget under 10K.

Let me see what I have in drydock or I can find plans on so we can do them right for FSX.

Very nice work with Oriskany! I had been working on the island but was not happy with my hull to put a 27C class out.

Huh, I had never heard that....fascinating!

SkippyBing already knows I'm sure, but even with the rounddown there is still generally some airflow disturbance behind the ship usually referred to as "the burble". It varies by ship, wind, and who is making the wind...God or the ship.

I also had a buddy who learned the value of the round down after his hook smacked it...callsign "Slappy". :-D

Haze Gray deployed all those years, and I never knew that either!! NC

I seemed to have misplaced my parameters for the Piglet A-1 Skyraider to make it carrier compatable. hook, catapult, etc...

Can someone please repost?

Thanks
Jeff

Could a kind soul advise where the download for this might be, a bit wrapped around the axel with things to bumble through all 20 pages. Coming along nicely, my favorite sort of project!

Crashaz,
is the cfs2 Coral Sea/Midway portable to FSX? I tried installing both when EXPAT indicated he had a Midway, but for me, it fails to load - perhaps as is, it is not useable with ai carriers?
A rebuild or rework effort of either or both of these would be annother great addition for FSX accleration.
Thanks for participating in this thread - the Oriskany is a fantastic addition, and as Gary continues to work on her, will only get better.

Post 109 on April 17th of this thread is where Gary's zip file is located. It is a beta release.

I have the original model... so I can compile to FSX after I retag everything. Going to be a few weeks at the earliest. My rig is in drydock awaiting a Haswell upgrade. I am on the road next week returning to Dallas from Savannah. Next week I will be picking up the parts to get the PC upgrade done then will put Coral Maru/Midway in drydock next. :wavey:

Crashaz,
That is fantastic. Thank you in advance for sharing, when you get them out of drydock!
I'll look forward to posting a vid or two, with your permission, of course.
Cheers.

I know this is only a BETA release at the moment but I thought id mention an issue ive been having with framerates particularly when parked/taxiing on the bow end of flightdeck they slow right down to a crawl (by crawl i mean complete standstill!) havent figured out exactly whats causing it atm but at a guess its got something to do with the steam effects on the bow cats but theres no apparent way to remove them to find out. has anyone else had issues here or am I barking up the wrong tree apart from that she looks fantastic with the new majestics coming on & flying stations Victorious nearing completion we should have quite a bit to play with.

Hooky

Hooky,
Gary mentioned that he was aware of the frame hit at the bow. Not sure if it has to do with steam effects - I dont think I have that effect in my beta version. Could be wrong though - LOL. I spend more time landing (and boltering) than I do launching!

Gotta another video (two actually) in the works. Once they are cleaned up, I'll post the youtube links.

Cheers.

Hi Hooky,

Deke's right it's not the steam effects but the way the original sketchup model was created before I started tinkering with it. Somewhere in the recesses of this thread the problem was originally raised and when I dug deeper into the model I found hundreds of hidden polys within the hull structure. I've cut almost all of them out to see if that improves things (though the addition of deck crew might have offset that saving). I've been trying a new texture process but without a UV wrap capability it's proving difficult so might ditch that idea.

on vacation at the moment so all work on the next release suspended!

:)

Gary,
Hope your holiday is going well!

I just uploaded another video to youtube which includes your fantastic Oriskany. I added the smoke effect using MCX until your next release comes out,
This video is a bit historical with some minor liberty taken - but Oriskany with VAH-4 Det Golf embarked in October '62 did have Skywarriors on alert with targets and special weapons loaded during the Cuban Missile crisis - my father was the Heavy 4 Det Officer in charge back then and related this story to me long ago.

I hope you and all enjoy.

NC, for mobile uploading search on "Oriskany Skywarriors WESTPAC alert 1962"

Best,
