NAS Alameda, CA KNGZ for FSX

So, SO cool! I never had the chance to visit Alameda when it was still active, but with your creation, I will be able to!! NC :encouragement:

Thanks chief, all you guys with your encouragement throughout this project have made it fun and worthwhile through all the software conflicts and learning curves. I also want to thank those who have helped and all the "testers" of each version as I posted them. I just peeked over here while searching for some Commissary info which I found and getting back to work on it now. I'll check in here later.

The Base Is Still Alive

TGYCGIJOES have you quit on NAS Alameda? I have a load of reservists for the terminal.

I've arranged berthing for them in the Enlisted Barracks Building 002 as soon as you come in the Main Gate and Meals at the Galley Building 003.

Or if you don't like what they're serving tonight, the Homeport Club opens at 16:00

Seriously, we haven't quit but the last building to be added being done by my partner is still in progress. We decided that with so many custom buildings he and I did coming out so nice, that we replaced some of the generic FSX objects with custom ones. I am done with all my work on it. As soon as he gives me his last one complete and tested, I will upload it, save, compile and upload the link here.

It will be a complete stand-alone new airbase not an update with instructions on what to do and remove if you have earlier version(s) so that there will be no conflicts which occurred with one of my beta-testers who got MY work to make sure it was all ok. AI Ships and Sound Files will also be separate so that you can use or not your choice. Patient a little longer and it will be well rewarded. :wavey:

These four pics show objects that I have taken from the works of Jim Dhaenens. The two hangers I can replace. The water tower and ball field fence can be removed.

I hate to remove the GCA. I modified Mr. Dhaenens radar to put on top. GCA units like this, in one form or another, were on most Navy fields in the 50's to 70's. I've never seen one anywhere in FSX. There probably was one at KNGZ. For anyone that's interested here's a link for info= http://gca-atc.org/index.htm

I don't really know how to ask Mr. Dhaenens for his permission, I've never published before.

If I don't get any feed back, I'll sub what I can and give it a shot.

SEM

P.S. Yes, I accidentally removed the VP ramp. BTW I lived in a mobile home behind the hangar while it was built. I owned the trailer, paid the navy $26 for rent, including utilities.

.

Semo, send him a PM and ask his permission. I have on one of his objects and he granted it. May take him some time to answer as he doesn't visit regularly any more. I think at one time he had an email address in some of his stuff. Worth a try.

Steve

Ask Him

I agree with you. See if you can find an email or PM him for permission to use them. Most designers are willing as long as you give them credit in the readme for their work and you don't sell it. Would be nice to have a NAS Glenview for FSX. I took 140 officers and cadets to RIMPAC 93 at NS San Diego back in 1993 flying them from NAS Glenview to North Island and back to Glenview 3 weeks later in a C-9. Got to sit in the right hand seat for a hour or so. My last training before retiring with 12 years in the USNSCC as Asst Regional Director 9th Naval District.

Thanks Duckie and TGYCGIJOES for the encouragement!

I think I'll go ahead by changing the 2 hangers and water tower. From the read me, I believe I'm ok on the radar by giving credit (Glad to do it. Mr. Dhaenens' works are things of beauty)

I've already been working on it. I have to find new static a/c. Don't remember whose a/c I used with SAMM.

I haven't used ADE in a while. When I'm ready I'll start a new thread. Don't want to hog yours.

Thanks, Steve (not a duckie Steve, all though my 1st wife was a Quackenbush)

Lookiin for that new thread

Waiting with anticipation for your NAS Glenview. Too bad we're all doing this stuff 20 years too late. Didn't take very many pictures. I spent one weekend a month at Glenview and was on the flightline every Open House. My boss was personal friends and golf buddy with the C.O. both of them living in Glenview. We lived in Mount Prospect which is the next suburb west. Didn't have to stay in the BOQ either at NAS Glenview or Great Lakes unless I wanted to.

I echo your comments about wishing I had taken more pictures of bases I had been on. But do have to add that it wasn't a easy matter to do so, way back then. Base security would interfere quickly if they saw anyone taking pictures on base, and especially anywhere near the flightline. And it doesn't help matters when most of the buildings get torn down and replaced. NC

If the objects you mention appear in mr Dhaenens own scenery, then you could link to those and an instruction to install them in your read-me, and they should appear in your scenery.

cheers ian

Good idea Ian, but I repainted them. I'll use Hangars from DNVHGR.ZIP and UFC4HGRS.ZIP and include the zips in my file. I'll find a autogen water tower.

I know what you guys mean about pictures. I have a few shots from the tower and a few b/w negatives somewhere from playing around in the base darkroom.

My funniest story was at NS San Diego. Being a new officer, I was on the starboard side as we left the harbor with my trusty Nikon (ignorantly) shooting pictures of the Sturgeon Class SSN just going out to sea...all of a sudden over the 1MC blares the announcement: "THIS IS THE CAPTAIN...Will the officer taking pictures of that sub put his camera in his stateroom safe and leave it there on the double"! OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPPPPPS.

:running:

A friend and I were in high school when his brother, who was a Navy enlisted aircrew member on A-3s, came back home on leave. This would have been in 1969-70, maybe 70-71. He went back from leave and a short time later I found out he had been killed in the crash of an A-3 at Alameda. Info I got decades later indicated the aircraft had rotated and was on climbout when it suffered a dual engine failure and basically fell out of the sky. I would like to include this scenery in my FSX sim for his sake.

I remember the same thing happened to me when on one of those tourist harbor boats at Charleston SC. As the boat went by the Nuke Sub base, I heard the cameras clicking; then a booming voice over the PA system reminded everyone that no pictures are to be taken while passing by the Submarines.
