Installing, waiting, or sticking with 2020?

Late to 2020 last December after a 5 or 6 year Flight sim holiday, don't see me making the jump for about 6 months. Think I'll let others deal with the inevitable teething problems.
Haven't had time to fly more than 20 minutes total in the last 3 weeks anyway.

Working fine for me today, instant load every time.

Has some initial-release quirks but the VR and 2D performance is pretty awesome on my system.

I pre-ordered MSFS2024, but after seeing all the problems, I got a refund from Steam. I've got other uses for the money coming up to Christmas. I'll wait till it's matured a little and then read the reviews again.

I think the premise of the question is off. That you have to either install 2024 and delete 2020 or not install 2024 at all. I got 2020 right away but it took quite a while before I was using it most of the time. I now finally am used to 2020 and have it configured the way I like it or at least am used to it. I installed 2024 the day it was release but I have yet to successfully use it. Its going to take a lot of time before I get used to it and will probably be bouncing back and forth between the two.

there is nothing to say you have to choose one of the other right away, you can have both and slowly move from one to the other.

The problem for me seems to be that I am not really convinced yet. Is it all worth it?

Apart from the first day desaster - which reminded me very much of the FSX lauch, being utterly unplayable for me at the time - the transition to 2024 will give me a lot more to do:
1. getting a new rig and knowing myself I´d go for the absolute top range with the (sigh) also top range price tag
2. switching to Windows 11 and setting up my entire system again. A time consuming endevour for sure.
3. plunging into 2024 that - at the moment - might run or not really...? Even imagining resetting all my keyboard and controler configurations gives me additional grey hairs.

And all this for a sim that features careermode or missions, which I won´t ever use. I wanna hop in my favourite aircraft and start a relaxing eyecandy flight. And even though I feel tempted by the better overall visuals and groundvisualisations I still doubt that this is worth the effort over 2020 at the moment.

So still enjoying 2020, but also planing on a new system, but no hurry. I will give in - I always do:rolleyes:, but I want to make it all work. After a few weeks or months Asobo and MS will have ironed out the release-bugs and things will get smoother and interesting to me.

I am even a bit curious to see how it would run on my 6 year old current system that is still rock-strong with 2020, but just above average specs for 2024. May puchase it just to give that a try. Lack of Bandwidth is at least not a problem I am affraid off. Mmmmhhhh....?

Still no joy for me, tried earlier today but it froze loading a flight. On the fence of requesting a refund at the moment, same reasons as Paul K. I'm in the UK, from reading forums, we seem to be experiencing the worst issues. My internet is 500mb, so the problem isn't local.

I actually got it running (well, slowly walking as it is:) on my current system with graphic settings on middle. It might have potential on a newer system, but the horrible performance on photoreal areas and cities is significant, but the main issues for me are:
- the keyboard and contoller settings are a true nightmare. Plus. my gamepad is not fully regognized and no axis are configurable at all.
- The UI, especially the settings are also a mess
- Even though I put the rolling cache and the community folder to my larger gaming harddrive/partition it messes up my system drive with data.
- the aircraft menu/browser is three steps back from 2020, especially the weight and balance settings...
As far as all this goes I got myself a refund and I will probably take the plunge much later and happily stick with 2020 for the time being.

The more complaints I read about the problems with MSFS 2024, the longer I will wait. I remember when 2020 was released, there was a flurry of updates to fix glitches. Almost like a wackamole response from Asobo. I had hoped this situation wouldn't happen, but am definitely not surprised that it has. I am out of town until next Wednesday evening. Maybe by that time things will have improved. NC

The reasons to switch to 2024 are starting to pile up for me. In order of personal importance:
- better flight dynamics
- nice ground-level detail in wild and rural areas (though inhabited areas still suck)
- walkabout feature to enjoy the above
- will eventually have to switch because addons/updates/support will taper off for 2020

Things that people have been raving about that fail to impress me so far include the improved lighting and clouds. I have yet to see anything in hours of YT videos that looks much better than FS2020.

None of these is urgent so I will continue to wait for bugs to be ironed out and the servers to calm down. Some drawbacks look like they will be permanent, such as reliance on servers/connection and the bad new UI. FS2020 will continue to stay on my system, just like P3D, FSX, and FS9.

Got family stuff through Monday so won’t have time to dive back in to 2024 until next Tuesday.

I’m totally good with that. I expect patches to start hitting in the next week or two, and between increased server capacity and more people getting frustrated by glitches, things should be somewhat better next week.

It’s a staggeringly rough launch, but I’m sure by Christmas we’ll all be cruising around having fun with gripes and complaints back to their usual dull roar level. :)

I uninstalled 2024 today, still haven't managed to get one minute of flying in. I'll revisit it at a later date when I'm confident that the bugs are ironed out. In the mean time, 2020 is working well and I'm awaiting a response on a refund, but would rather keep my money for now. I don't get much time to play, so don't want to be spending it faffing about and that includes having set all the controller assignments up. Whilst the visuals have moved forwards, the UI has gone backwards. On FSX as I remember, you could assign the Hat switch to pan. On 2020/2024, you have to assign each of the 8 points on the switch! Why couldn't they have built a copy / paste option to copy controller assignments over from 2020?

For me I'm keeping both installed. The flight dynamics alone have me sold, along with the walk around and better graphics. Have not seen a stutter once since installation. The UI is very confusing at first, but I'm learning. The ATC sucks bigtime compared to 2020. My Tobii eye tracker has a constant right turn that I can't get rid of. It is not evident in 2020. It is recognized in the controls menu, but no setting adjustments as there are in SCS ATS and ETS.

Right now I can't use 2024, as there was an update posted a couple hours ago, and since it downloads and installs automatically, with no rollback available, it now causes mine to crassh during initial loading, and throws an error code. I have to wait for a hotfix before I can use it again.

When you get back in (can’t believe the update made it worse for you, sigh), there’s a workaround for the Tobii issue. I had eye tracking working on Wednesday by fussing with Opentrack (which let me fine-tune things), and now Tobii has an official process for using Opentrack with MSFS 2024:

Hopefully this will be a lesson for FS2029 and they’ll have an open beta for that one… Ridiculous an MS hardware partner has to suggest an open-source utility to make it work,

I've got MS2020 re-installing in the background right now. I'll keep MS2024 installed as well since doesn't take up much HD space.

I gave it a try but it's just not enjoyable enough to put up with the never-ending list of things that are F'd up about it right now. Hope it gets better with time, but it needs a lot of work. The last straw was figuring out this AM that several of my favorite supposedly compatible MSMP aircraft aren't actually compatible with 2024.

I think I may know where MS is getting all the "new" server speed for MS2024. :)

When I posted yesterday that I was re-installing 2020, I had just hit the install option. Just the base sim and MSMP items. That was a 9AM yesterday. I've left the install running. Right now, 22.5 hours later it still has 37 items left to install.

After reading about addon incompatibility and the ATC that won't ATC, I think I'm sticking around with 2020 for much longer than I'd originally anticipated.

I'm actually flying both today. left Florida this AM heading towards South America. First Key West to Tulum in 2020. Currently Tulum to Belize in 2024.

ATC in 2024 definitely whacky. Cruising at 6000' there's not much difference in the how the terrain looks, but so far, I'm flying over low country and beaches. The ocean looks the same in both at this altitude. Down low, 2024 is better looking in some places.

On an airport there's a huge difference. In 2024, even with AI Traffic off, there are still a lot of aircraft sitting around. Not sure if they are static or not. The GA look nice, the commercial is a mixed bag. But the problem is that everything not a building in 2024 continually warps in and out of view, even at incredible close distances. Very disturbing. :)

I don't see that close distance warping in 2020. Usually after something in 2020 finally comes within visual range, it stays that way.
