Introducing the Avia 51

Thanks for all the help and comments; greatly appreciated.

I am trying to make a graphic of the face of the R12 engine ( a 7 cylinder) since a picture cannot be found.

I took the cylinder and housing section from the R17 (a 12 cylinder, same appearance) and mapped it to 1/7th of a cylinder in gmax, then array created a 7-cylinder engine.

Now I need some photoshop help to fill in the gaps.I would also like the graphic to be a little darker as if it were hiding back inside a cowling, and probably more of a monotone.

Attaching the source R-17, an angled view of the RK-12, and the resulting R-12 attempt. :)

Any takers? :)

Avia 51 Exterior Mapped

Progress on the "51" side with the exterior mapped, excepting the engine faces of course.

Today, I should finish mapping of the interior cabin.

Cockpit, panel and gauges, and flight model remain.

Milton, I think you could be using far more from the lefthand photo. It certainly looks great quality wise.
The drive-shaft obviously is of no interest if not mistaken.

The 3 top cylinders are in good perspective and seem copy/pastable so it shouldn't be too difficult.

Surely they'll all be rushing to the rescue in a while but, in the event of our many talented texmen overlooking this;
I'll have a bash Chief!

I'd rather they took it on as I'm listening to some serious classical 'music' right now :icon_lol:

It looks like you have also cut out the cockpit overhead windows as well. I saw that engine and thought you had located an R 12.
In searching for the Avia powerplant, I looked at many 7 cylinder engines. By comparison, the Jacobs R-755 is very similar to the R 12 and could pinch hit for the Avia.
The center engines exhaust pipes look a bit forward to me. Maybe it's the angle, but you might take a look when you get a chance and see what you think.

Edit: Sorry, I missed the engine work comments above.

If you have a front-facing picture of the Jacobs, I'll certainly use it. Meanwhile, some additional shots to show where we are on the interior as well. :)

Good morning, Milton

I would be happy to work your engine graphics if you like. I hope the photo is physically larger. If not, I'll make due.

Oleboy,

The pictures I posted are original size. Once displayed, click to open.

My effort is 838X838. Will be reduced to 512 when done.

Thanks for giving it a go. :)

Real nice Milton. :icon29:

We all know finding cockpit refs on the 51 is a long shot. Was thinking maybe broadening the search to include the Avia 57 might help some? Granted it's probably more obscure than the 51 but being a trimotor also designed by Mr. Nebasar, it might have a similar layout.

Milton,

The progress on the Avia is astounding. Well done. :applause::applause:

If you need more pics of a 7 cyl radial would the Continental R-670 out of a Stearman do ?

I can take some from the Stearman I fly.

Pete.

Beat me to it Pete. Good on ya mate!

Do you mean Stearman as in 100% full blown Stearman? My all-time favourite aircraft.
Swap you the sounds for a Stearman for a ride...??? (icon:ddown on his knees grovelling pathetically:icon)

If so the Continental R-670 is almost a twin of the Avia.

I'd say go for it and let Milton choose.

Glad I have you for a buddy pete! :icon29:

edit: "Now let me see, where the heck did I put that brochure on touring New Zealand?"...

Hi Pete,

That might work too. If you do this, try to get as straight on to the prop shaft as you can.

Thanks :applause:

Thanks Moses; good point. Maybe we can find something there. :wavey:

Milton, question. will the image that Hurricane posted work? That is what appears to be the RK-12 http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/attachment.php?attachmentid=52756&d=1322064194&thumb=1

I have a very large photo. I would need to do some extensive work, but considering the profile (real deal) it may be worth the effort? You would have to check mapping for your source (use) of course.

I can send you the bigger image for testing?

I agree. The only issue is that picture was taken above the centerline of the engine so it can't be used as is. Note how you see the top of the prop shaft, and that the lower cylinders look shorter than the upper ones.
Now if you can use parts of the upper to make the others. But it is more complicated than that in that the center housing shows more on the top as well.

It took me several trys to get a good cut of the R-17 to get a more balanced jug/housing ratio to do the texture I made.

Not perfect yet. But would like opinion if it's usable.
