Vought RF-8 Crusader project, 2018

Hi, gray eagle! The visual effect shown in your pic above looks good. That's basically what we started out with in our PM conversation last week. I have nothing new to add since I'm still running FSX. I tested a few A/B effects from other jets and finally went back to TuFun's original (at least I think it's his original) A/B effect. Glowing burner can, some fire, nice flame - I'm satisfied. :encouragement: Now I have to figure out the AlphaSim F-8 paint kit, it's been ages since I've used one.

That's good to hear glad it's working for you. I think Ted said something on the thread about how P3D V3 is kind of goofy with some of the FSX effects. He has tried and tried to convert that effect you use in FSX and it just will not convert to that effect for P3D V3 - I wonder if any P3D V4 users have tried the old AB effect and curious how it looks.

Ted tried to get a larger outer burn ring and in flight the outer ring will bank like the plane and will not lock into place. Kinda wonky.

Edit: I think that AB burner effect was from the old AS CF-105 for FSX and when I use that plane and it's effects, sparks/embers are expelled from the AB.
Not so much P3D V3 perhaps V4 compatible

#149 contained a fix file and in the readme:
A fix for the light contollers in the newly released SOH ALPHA RF-8G

Is that the one you say isn't working for you in P3D V3?

Now the now effect.txt file you've attached here, is that yet a newer one?

#203 also has fx_ALPHA_F8_AB.txt
What is the fx name for the fx_ALPHA_F8_AB-2.txt?

I usually use step numbers when testing as not to lose previous changes. Just delete the -2 and rename the file from .txt to .fx, should be fx_ALPHA_AB.fx.

This effect is to test the flame in the AB tube to get the sprites from tilting and fix the sprite size. LM did a goof-up job on the effects for P3Dv3. No AB flame was added yet

Actually I thought it looked pretty good in FSX, although I didn't get any rear flame with it. I've kinda got lost in all the effects posts here.

I'll be adding an AB flame later just needed to fix issues in the tube for P3DV3. For FSX I will resize the sprites to match the tubes since P3Dv3 version increases the size of the sprites.

This will give a choice to use this one or use original version for FSX.

Thanks for the research and fixes. . I kinda guess that fx_ALPHA_F8_AB-2.txt would have to be renamed so I did and here are some screen shots of what that looks like on my machine:

This was taken when I paused the sim; when paused the blue flames are more noticeable and that plume on the tail end (cotton ball) is visible

This one is when I hit the prtscn and pasted it to paint. The burner animation is blurred - guess that's the way prtscn freezes the screen.

The first pic looks like the 1st stage AB and the second pic is the full AB. The 1st stage is not optimized for P3Dv3 (fx_ALPHA_EA6_Exh1).

Video with flame but did tweak it further than this example.

P3Dv3 only

WOW! Amazing :encouragement: I like that AB flame and color. Looks all good to me. :applause:

Edit: Ted,

What was the stumbling block in getting that AB flame to protrude out the back like you did?

So this effect would be for P3D3 only, do you use P3D4, and would ab effects be easier to work with in P3D V4?

Are you using P3D V4 and would another AB effect have to be done for P3D4?

Anyways, I sure am glad to see your video tweak of the AB flame.

You da man! :encouragement:

Clean up on tarmac 3! :icon_redface:
It must have been that plane director he ate. :biggrin-new:
Seriously, the A/B effect in your most recent video above looks great. The fire effect in the burner can especially. I hope you will make an equivalent file for use in FSX. :encouragement:

I agree, Despite the setbacks and frustrations that P3D V3 imposed, I must say Ted, you have really raised the bar on this one.:encouragement:

Now it's really cooking pushing those hot gasses right out of the tube! Part 1 is done now to part 2 shaping the AB flame.

Looks great!!! For your reference here is a pic of a VFP-63 Det 3 RF-8 on the cat aboard USS Midway in 1971. About as good a shot of the tail flame as you will see in daylight. It's brighter at night of course but not the white/blue hot flame of the newer jets.

+1 Looking good Ted.

Jerry,
That's a nice shot of an F-8 in burner.

Soon after an F-8 launch, I remember seeing the JDB's smoking , and people with buckets of water dowsing those smoldering JBD's that were torched from the F-8's burner flames like in your picture. Was on wooden flight deck of 27C carrier when that happened

Just a quick look at the flame progress and 2 stages of the AB effects.

That's looking great :gameon:

This demo looks like both 1st stage; no burner flame
and 2nd stage; full burner flame.

I like the orange glow added to the burner. Looks more realistic.

The AB code used only has 2 stages the one is at Full AB and 2 is at Stage 3 or 4 hence a very tiny flame as shown. Should be coded for more stages for lower AB effects like Jafo's version. Lowest AB effects would have some blue may be at stage 1 and at stage 6 full AB. So basically it's missing the first 4 stages of AB effects. It is what it is.

It is what it is.

Yes, and it's a shame the continuity of the effects were not passed on to P3D V3.

Jafto's version is only for FSX (He doesn't use P3D). The original nozzle size is too small for P3D V3. Fortunately, I made a cfg backup and will find and remove his pertinent effect files.
Too bad that P3D V3 caused issues like this.

Yea the P3Dv3 [lights] section is pita for this type of FSX effects. Don't have P3Dv4 so don't know if it's any different. Adding n1, n2, n3, etc. would give the smoke gauge more stages.

Anyways I've added more goodies (animation) to the effects! When all the animation is set next will be resizing the flame somewhat. The weekend is here and will be on it Monday.

Hi all - been away for a while, so am a bit behind on all the 'burner edits. Given I'm on P3Dv4.5, I should wait for TuFun to do his edits, insofar as the visible burner in that sim? I know posting here on the P3D issues is not ideal, but just trying to track progress.

I'm doing a VFP 206 last crusader paintjob. Where is the fwd canopy/windscreen mapped to?

Hi John, did you get an answer on this? I'm really looking forward to that particular paint scheme.

thanks again to Dean and all who are polishing / modding. It's much appreciated.

Kind regards,

dl

Looking at the F-100 with J-57 engine at full AB so timed the effects the same. Once I have both AB effects ready for P3Dv3, next will do the FSX version and upload it to the library.

Also, I received an email from an author this Saturday asked to do some graphic work for his novel so I accept the offer and will be tied up for a while. I'm amazed about the opportunity, this will be the fourth book I've done!
